Tall Steadicam Tales

This event took place at Tiffen's event at their facility in Burbank the day after Cinegear this past spring. I was consulting a little behind the scenes (and feeding audience questions to host Dave Chameides via iPad from the audience, which was a fun challenge) and I knew it was going to be special. Garrett has always been a legendary raconteur, possibly the best to ever come from behind the camera. He is of course the inventor of the Steadicam, Skycam, Divecam and a number of other amazing devices, in recent years turning his genius mind to solving issues for heavy industry and the elderly (gozeen.com).

He always brings an incredible command of language and a devilish sense of humor to his public talks. This one was designed for the hometown crowd, mostly Steadicam operators, and consisted entirely of battle stories from his early years on set wielding the "noble instrument". Essentially: skipping the vegetables and going straight to dessert. Over the years I've heard many of these stories but he somehow always brings something to new to them, and there were many I'd never heard. Also contained within are dead perfect impressions of Sly Stallone and Stanley Kubrick amongst others. At 82, he's as sharp as ever and endlessly entertaining to listen to.

Watched it. The guy makes a ton of toilet jokes, based. Talks about his experience on films during the 70s. Interesting insight on what goes on in a film set.

Ha, I love that the first takeaway is that he makes a lot of toilet jokes! Well, they were actual stories from things that happened so, guess there was a lot of focus on poop in the 70's.

I met Garrett in Sydney at an expo some years ago - I don't think he's aged a day!
