Talking Mouth Superimposed over Baby

Hi All,

I'm trying to add some very simple special effects to a video of mine. This is similar to the eTrade commercial. I have raw footage of a video with a closed mouth and I have footage of someone talking. I want to take the footage of someone talking and reduce it to just the mouth, and then superimpose that over the mouth of the baby so it appears the moving mouth is the baby's. It, of course, won't be realistic, but that isn't the point.

Does anyone know how best to achieve this result in FCP?

The real point of this post is to tell you that you will need to experiment.

You will need to read up in the manual of the things I am telling you if you don't know what they are. I won't tell you what a garbage matte is, I won't tell you what a feather is nor how much to do it. I won't tell you what a composite mode is and I won't tell you what you really want to hear. Because 1) it's in the manual and 2) you will need to experiment.

OK... two ways to do this in FCP

1) Baby footage in V1 and Mouth footage in V2 use a garbage matte on mouth footage and set around the mouth. Scale it down to fit and move it. (Do NOT ask how to scale or move!!)

2) Create a black and white mask and use your luma transfer modes to get the mouth to show up.

Of course you'll want to grade it using some Color Correction to match the tracks.

Again, think of the garbage matte as cutting out the video. One TIP... DON'T try to scale the mouth to size until AFTER you put the garbage matte on it!!

But I'd use the luma transfer method if I HAD to do it in AE. You can get some basic understanding of that from this:

Now -- you'll really need to track this, so FCP isn't really the app you want. After Effects, Shake or Motion can do this. You'll track the nose, chin and corners of the mouth and then lock that track to the new mouth. Will give a smoother motion to the mouth and really make it look locked on.
