Tablet for real time drawing?

An idea I have is instead of having some lower 3rds or just plain text come onto the screen, why not have something drawn in real time onto the screen? I've never done this before and I'm not sure it will be possible, but is there someway that I can buy some sort of drawing tablet, have a transparent background in some type of software, draw something and have that record in real time, then overlay that onto another video?

If it's possible, I don't need a fancy tablet or anything, just something that will get the job done.

When you write "real-time" do you mean live broadcast or live projection? Or do you just mean to capture the drawing action and play it bacK?

I recently completed a consulting job for someone who wanted to write on top of a video, with the whole thing projected, using the software Max (not 3ds Max). The result cost the client about $750 for my work, plus $400 for the software. My client uses a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet (about $360), which is fantastic. Of course, you could always just use a mouse.

I'm sure there are less-expensive options out there.
