I know vegas doesnt like raw .mov files from these cameras but it has been dealing with them fine. Until...one day i opened up my project and all the files on the timeline are black. the sound plays fine, but there is no video!
does anyone know how and or why this happened? I already re-installed and it didnt fix it.

Quicktime got updated. Revert to quicktime 7.6.2 and turn off auto-updates. Remove iTunes from your editing machine too.

I've experienced this tonight for the first time with rendered footage in Vegas. the end of it was all black but audio was still there.

Another option is to convert to AVI with cineform neo scene. I prefer this method because the AVI files are much easier to work with in Vegas. I know this is more than you asked for but I thought it might be worth considering. ;)

i do this, but i have small projects that i have finished without going through that process. But i do convert to avi now with cineform

Cineform changes the color space of these files, which is counter productive if you are delivering for the web. Not an insurmountable issue, but a real pain to have to correct all the time.

Hey Chris,

If you have Vegas 9/32 bit, you could try using DVFilm Epic for the real time editing of h.264 files. No transcoding. You can start editing instantly while the epic files are being made in the background. When you are done editing with the epic files, you can switch to the original files by just clicking a button. You edit the original files so you don't have to worry about a colorspace shift.

Epic also helps with the Vegas instability with h.264/QT files. I've used it with 100's of clips without any problems.

Check out the demo and get more info at www.dvfilm.com/epic

Thanks,
Andy
