syncing sound to slate

I have 7D footage in which the sound was recorded externally to digital files.

all the editing I've done the sound was recorded with the video.
I guess my question is what is the best way to link these two working with FCP 6?

Is it setting in points in the audio file and the video file and selecting the merge clips option? That didn't seem to work for me and that might be because I also have the 7D internal sound with the original clips in my browser.

right now I'm putting clips and audio together in a time line but this seems like it will be an annoyance when I actually start editing if I have to grab clips from the timeline instead of setting in and outs with clips in the viewer.

Thanks

Convert the 7D footage to ProRes first.

Then yes, mark IN on both clips, and use the MERGE CLIP command. Then DON'T use the camera mic audio, only use the external recorded audio.

If you sync in sequences, you can use those sequences AS clips. Just load them into the viewer, and work away. Be SURE to press CMD-F10 or CMD-F9 when adding to the sequence..so that you bring over the clips, and not nest them. You can see what I mean in this tutorial...

Ah, I see, the audio file is there I was just hearing the 7D audio over it so I thought they didn't merge.

using the sequences as clips is a great idea,

thanks a lot.
