Syncing background noise

I've got a boom mic hooked directly to my DVX. Sometimes, in a typical conversation scene, when I cut from one actor to the next, there is a subtle but noticable difference in the background sound (when shooting outdoors only).

What I've been doing is taking a seperate sound recorder and recording background noise at each of my locations prior to shooting. My idea was to then overlay this onto the images, when editing. Does Avid have the facilities do to this, or am I complicating matters?

You basically recorded "room tone" a good thing. I'm sure Avid has multiple tracks and you could add the sound. One problem. You are going to double up the noise and that could be bad depending on how loud your dialog is. It really depends on what you are aiming at. In a Doc adding a little noise to even it all out is probably fine. In a narrative film one usually does everything poss to get rid of as much BG as possible because your going to create your own and you don't want them fighting. In that case you probably wouldn't add the noise, because by the time you finish thinning out the BG and have added your own the differences wont be noticeable. What I would use the RT for is filling in the holes in each perspective.
