Syncing analog audio to DV?

I recorded a band playing live in a radio station with my camera but the audio turned out really bad. I used the on-camera mic as I only wanted the video for my archives. Well now the band is asking for the video and the audio is horrible. I do have a recording on analog audio tape of the performance, but when I tried to sync it up to the video in FCP 5, it just wasnt working. Any tips on how I can make this work? Thanks!

BTW, this is what I did: Captured the entire performance in FCP, then digitized the analog tape audio into Pro Tools. I then imported the audio into FCP and moved things around in the timeline.

Probably won't work. You have to have the right kind of sync. DAT or recorder to match things up. I tried this once with a nice tape recorder, but the sync was off no matter what I did. It just lays the track down at a different rate.

Call the radio station, talk to the engineer and ask him to burn a CD of the session. (That's what we do at the station I work for.) That should solve any 'woo-woo' problems you might be having with the tape audio.

If that's your only copy, and assuming it's pretty close to the right overall length, you may have to sync each song. Maybe twice per song if it slips over 3-4 minutes. I've sync'd that way and it's not too tough. Just find a good guitar strum, drum hit, hard vocal and match it up. Then head down the timeline until you find it starting to slip again and snip a few frames of your video to keep it matched up. Tedious, yes.
