Syncing 552 with a camera

Hey guys,

So far, I've been recording the sound for short films, mostly. As you know, Time Code sync is not necessary when one works with DLSR, provided there is a clapper on set. However, now I foresee 2-3 works when TC sync will be a must. So, I need your advice on TC sync between my recorder (Sound devices 552) and a camera with TC in/out (BNC). My initial idea was to use a wireless system (G3 or Shure UR1/5) to send TC from the camera to 552. But I’m not sure if it’s a right thing to do.

Will it work or I have to buy a wireless TC generator and receiver?

Thanks.

Many folks use a sync boxes, which are generally very stable. Ambient's ACN-TL and Lockit Buddy to name two. And/or, a cheaper alternative is using a wireless camera hop to record a sync audio track, then syncing in post with PluralEyes (or manually). Another option is a TC slate for visual reference, however a TC signal would need to be fed to the 552, it won't generate TC on it's own.
Another cheap option is a 'bloop slate', which is silent and inconspicuous. However neither of these methods will prevent drift, if the 'takes' are long.
There's recent discussion over on the JW Sound Group about DSLR double system docu shooting.

I would jam the 552 from the camera. You stated the cam has TC I/O via BNC so you'd need a BNC-TA3 cable. Jam to start the day, after battery changes, after lunch and all should be good.

I thought about it, too. However, on my request regarding jamming from a camera, the Sound Devices's support team gave me "No", saying that 552 has to be hooked up to TC generator all the time.

The 552 doesn't have any built in time code generator which is why it always needs external code.
