"Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" was awful. What a disappointment. Everybody who saw Oldboy said "his first movie was way better." Well I saw it and if having a completely unfocused storyline and no point whatsoever is "better", then whoa, this movie leaves Oldboy in the dust!

i'm sure the vengeance apologists are going to point out the filmmaking (which was pretty good, I admit). But this movie lacked that one ingredient that's supposed to be the most important of all. That little thing called, uh, what was it again? Oh yeah. A STORY!

Boo Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance.

Amazing how many people don't think a story is important. I keep referring people back, again and again, to Festen (The Celebration) shot on cheap hand-held miniDV cameras. One of the best movies ever. Because of the STORY.

Even short filmmakers should ask what the story is. At least TRY. And have an ending at least. Otherwise, we might as well just watch montages of pretty images that make no sense whatsoever (rather than montages of images that make barely any sense).

I'll forgive technical limitations WAY before I'll forgive story problems. If it has a good story, I don't care if it was shot on a consumer Hi8 camera.

What are you talking about its a beautifully shot film and great story.

Now im a chan wook park fan hes my favorite director. the shot are beautiful the lack of dialouge and the long stand stilll images burn up the screen. i mean the movie revovles around a a deaf-Mute guy. I like how you only hear music three time during the movie and the movie is nearly 3 hours long.

its done something right, he won some awards for it. The movie is beautiful and messed up. but it did have a story. and images told it.

i mean look at the summary:

This is the story of Ryu, a deaf-mute, and his sister, who requires a kidney transplant. Ryu's boss, Park, has just laid him off, and in order to afford the transplant, Ryu and his girlfriend develop a plan to kidnap Park's daughter. Things go horribly wrong, and the situation spirals rapidly into a cycle of violence and revenge.

Chan wook park said he wanted each revenge film to be different, now oldboy is a perfection of this concept i agree and sympathy for lady vengence is fantastic as well. I believe hes written and directed some of the best hate driven films ever. Sympathy for mr vengenece is a beautiful concept of no dialouge and pure images and what situations these people end up in.

Amen to that. There's no excuse to lack of story.

Spidey, I agree brother. This was a wonderful movie. I loved it. Old Boy was superior but sympathy was great too.

I had no problem following the story. And was interested all the way through. I think Park is an incredible story teller.

Plus I love the girlfriend in this movie. Dam she's cute.

first of all, i love Oldboy, it's one of my favorite films of 05. But this film was all over the place. It never had a clear-cut storyline. It changed several times. I agree the filmmaking was excellent, but I can't agree more than that.

c.g. you should read some article with chan woo park, he said each movie is different like each story of revenge is.
He said this one was never a clear image of hate. it was suppose to make you jump back and forth because you never know who the good guy is or bad guy it suppose to be grey image of people.

no one is good, only good person was the dead sister and little girl. i think the worse character would be the retard, he kinda made the chain of even happen.

read some articles with him or watch the movie again thinking that hate isnt so clean and clear cut like oldboy then you might enjoy it a bit better.
