sweetening audio

i will be shooting some footage in very close proximity to a street and was wondering if anyone had any tricks to dampening the unwanted noise from traffic without loosing any of the quality in captured dialogue

Re: sweetening audio

Just keep that mic pointed to your subjects as close as possible. If possible maybe try putting up sound blankets around your shoot. I've actually never tried this before but I heard that it helps. If all else fails, you can ADR. It's really tough trying to stop cars and other unwanted sounds away. Do the best you can and good luck!

Re: sweetening audio

sharpshot, are you using external mics?
ie, shotgun-boom pole, lavalier(s)
hanging blankets...interesting possibilities...
Best 'o luck to ya

Re: sweetening audio

Keeping the mics as close as possible to the speakers is the best thing to do.  If you can use handheld dynamic ENG mics, you'll be able to reduce most of the noise.  Next best is shot gun mic.  Lavs pick up too much ambient noise and should be used only as a last resort.

Some ways to reduce noise in post is to record the noise on a separate channel, then subtract it from the soundtrack.  Make sure both channels are aligned perfectly.  Also you can use the noise as a source in noise reduction filters.  A sharp highpass filter at around 100Hz will also help.
