Surveillance Cameras

I started this thread to ask a question I am sure MANY of us have asked....why do Surveillance Cameras SUCK? In this day and age, a surveillance camera could be a cheap 3 chip camera...but for some reason they are usually not. We are so used to seeing a smalll black and white TV about 8" in size with the snowiest reception...

I was at Home Depot a few months ago with my GF. We stumbled across their lame surveillance camera display with a very bad Black and White reception. My question is WHY? Why do convenience stores and the like continue to use sub-par equipment???

Am I missing something???? EILLANCE

You know, its something I've asked myself many, many times over.

Think about it, next time you watch Crimewatch on TV (don't know the American equivalent)

Why does the only existing CCTV footage look so DAMN CRAP?! how on earth is anyone suppose to ID anyone with such lame quality.

I think all CCTV's should be made HD, its one of those things that is critical when it comes to image quality, because when you want to grab a still from a CCTV, I'd be happier to do it from a HD source then a crappy SD source anyday.

That gives me an Idea lets start a business and be the very first HD CCTV company in the world !! :)

Wait...

I just googled "High Definition CCTV" and the only "HD" CCTV's are 480 TV lines or 520 TV lines with in SD format ! not proper HD.

then there is this:

BUT its only 720P @ 2.5 FPS

Do either of you know where to buy long lens digital cameras? My neighbor is a PI and is looking for something to replace his old 8mm. Has to have a long telephoto and not cost two arms and legs. Thanks

I agree completely. Even a cheap consumer-cam, around 400$, would beat the quality of those 2000$ things!
