Surround Sound

Hi

Anyone mixing surround sound audio in Vegas, and if so what is your audio setup? As I understand it you need a soundcard with 6 audio outs rather than the optical on as on sound blaster cards. I was thinking about getting into surrond sound and would be interested to hear what setups people are using.

Thanks in advance

Re: Surround Sound

Personally for surround sound I use 3.1 in front (LCR) using 3 ofmy Labtec 5.1 speakers then plug a pair of open air headphones in to the rear channel port to monitor the rear sounds. I find this gives me a more accurate sound field, as being so close to the front speakers makes the rear sounds ineffective.

As for using the Digital out to your speakers, it should work as Vegas uses Direct X to output to the channels and Direct X supports both Analog and Digital output. I have never tried it though, as i dont have digital speakers.

Re: Surround Sound

I'm using an Echo Gina, it has 8 analog outs & I just route those to my five speakers and sub. Vegas totally rocks with the surround stuff & it's torture mixing in stereo after you've played with the surround mix. The center channel anchors the dialog to the screen so well & you can really add a ton of other sounds ( ambience, river noise, etc) without losing the intelligibility of the dialog track. The sub is very cool as well - the only killer is the price of all the speakers.

have fun and good luck.

Re: Surround Sound

I would imagine the best thing to do would be run a digital cable from your digital out to a home theater amp with home theater speakers to test it out. Firewire out to your Big screen TV and your set to rock and roll :)

Re: Surround Sound

I have also had the Echo Gina (www.echoaudio.com)recommended for use with Vegas Video for surround. I havent gotten it yet, but several people (including people working on a tutorial series) have recommended it.

Re: Surround Sound

Thanks for your replies, I've seen trhe Echo cards recommended on the SF website. Really I was hoping to build a setup as cheaply as possible, and didn't want to go the 6 outs into multiple amps route. Anyone actually using a Soundblaster card for surround mixing?

Thanks again

Re: Surround Sound

i have been using a Sound Blaster Audigy Platnum to mix, is this not good? boy i just spent $3000 on this camera and am learning that i need alot of other stuff.

Re: Surround Sound

Vegas uses Direct X for the surround stream, any Soundblaster or compatible Direct X 6/7 channel card will work fine.

Re: Surround Sound

and an ASIO compatible card will give you less latency when runnign dx effects

SBLive Audigy is fine for this kinda work as SBLive cards record and play in native 48kh (just like DV)
