Surfboard shaper doc shot on Epic and Scarlet

I liked the piece, But it felt like most of the cuts were way to fast. He speaks slow, and he's mellow. The cuts should follow that tempo, especially when he's shaping. It goes through the shots so quickly that it actually becomes annoying. As a viewer, for this piece, less is more.

When the content is "shaky" cool shots only exaggerate this weakness. Your piece (because of those cool cut-aways and camera placements) looks like some corporate sponsored propaganda then genuine doc coming from someone that loves surfing and film.

Some of the imagery is beautiful. But I agree that the quick edits don't match the subject. Also, I really wanted to know why he's making a surfboard collage of the RNC and Paul Ryan. You don't really think of surfers as being conservative but Orange County definitely leans that way. Could have been an opening to discuss that intersection of work and values.

I think that the raw materials are good but the end product needs some work.

I like the use of nat sound (so many people under-use audio) but sometimes it's so high in the mix that it becomes hard to understand what Tim is saying.

What Tim is talking about or feeling doesn't always come across visually. Many of the shots of him shaping seemed laid down w/o much regard for what he was saying at the moment which gives the piece a disjointed feel.

Don't use slowmo/speed ramps just because you can (especially in a mello piece like this). The slowmo should be used to emphasize or underscore something important (like italics in writing) and not tossed in just because it was shot and it looks cool.

the cuts where too fast to me also .. i couldnt put my teeth into it . but the sound was great and beautiful visuals. i even think just extended the shots you have will make a big difference is how it grabs the viewer. but the quick cuts make it feel like a commercial than an intimate study
