Supreme Court Clears Way for Internet Sales Taxes

I just heard a news story on a local radio station that my home state of Connecticut has signed agreements with 500 online Internet retailers for them to start collecting Connecticut sales taxes for online purchases. The State official in the news story stated that there is software available for Internet retailers to easily determine applicable sales taxes. This morning I ordered a German made pressure cooker from their USA web site, which is located in North Carolina, and I was charged my State's sales tax. Looks like the days of buying products online with no sales tax are over. I'm sure B&H, Adorama, and other photo/video retailers are now or soon will be collecting applicable sales taxes.

I received an email from B&H a few days ago stating that they would begin collecting Illinois state sales tax starting today (10/12/2018). I don't know if this includes the county and city additions to the base state rate. From the tone of their message, which went out of the way to remind me of my value to them as a customer, I got the impression they expect to lose quite a bit of business due to this change.

^ I got the same email from BH (from their B2B "team") here in Indiana. Found it odd that I received it around noon on 10/11... almost less than 12 hours before the new rule would take place. If the court decision was in June - why last minute notice?

Found this, dated 8 days ago:
"Starting next week, however, B&H will begin collecting sales tax in 15 more states, with plans to collect sales tax in a total of 22 states by the end of 2018.

Which 15 states will appear during the first round of additions remains to be seen; however, the total list of states in which B&H will collect sales tax by year's end will include AL, CO, CT, HI, IL, IN, KY, MD, ME, MI, MN, MS, NC, ND, NJ, NY OK, SC, SD, VT, WA and WI. This is after the Supreme Court ruled five to four in the South Dakota v. Wayfair case."

Ordered a part from B&H a few days ago and when I went to check out, BAM, there it was: Sales tax.

And I talked to one of my sales reps at a large dealer last week and they said that they were going to have to start collecting shortly, too.

You can only use the card with B&H. Its not a visa, aa, mc type card. You are charged tax on checkout but you are instantly credited back an amount dictated by where you live. In NY you will be instantly credited 8.875%. Just know that the APR is 29.99 % so pay your balance in full each month.

Yeah...exactly who are they "helping" with a credit card?

Received the email last evening.

Unless I’m missing something it’s Win-Win for me and NC. I usually use my PayPal Credit for all of my B&H purchases and the account is paid off in full every billing cycle, so I’d just use this instead and the sales tax is being paid as required, but somehow I’m being credited back that amount instantly netting a “sales tax free purchase”.

I just don't understand this court decision. Why should you pay state sales tax to a state in which you don't reside and receive no benefits from?

Because the internet has let consumers avoid paying their local sales tax which has left state budgets in critical condition regarding funding for roads ,fire departments ,schools etc.

You’re don’t. You pay the merchant the sales tax amount for where you live and it’s then submitted to your state.

When does this start? Planning on making a big purchase soon but maybe I'll do it sooner...
Probably dependent on when each state starts collecting the tax. For instance my state starts July 1, so I am not eligible for the bh card yet, but don't pay internet tax until July 1. Many states already started the end of last year so the bh card would be for them.

Yeah, I'd check. B&H started late last year and I had another dealer that started shortly thereafter(Dec?). My dealer actually called me a few days before to give me a heads up, because they knew I had some big-ish items I was thinking about buying.
