Superman titles

with the blue light coming out of the letters? no. but it would be awesome if someone figured it out.

Exactly, Hybridtheory.

Like the opening titles in Superman: The Movie and, more recently, Superman Returns.

Nope, that's not the look - that's a stuttered repeat, whereas the new ones have clean 3D projection. Probably gonna take a 3D app.

majormorgan,
Your sample is reminiscent of the end titles for Superman: The Movie and the opening titles for Superman II and I'd love to hear how you created them.
However, I'm really after the opening title look from the original and also the new movie.

How old and how cool they look. Obviously it will take a 3D application. Animating text extrusion parameter.

I played around with Shine a bit, but it didn't seem to quite produce the effect. You don't quite get the full extruded look of the glyphs.
Of course, that may also be due to my lack of experience.

Try 3D Stroke from Trapcode.

Create a text layer, then autotrace it and on the new autotraced layer apply the 3D stroke plugin. Enable Repeater and play with the settings. It won't be like the looks you want but it's close.

I did this in Apple motion a few months back, just messing around during some idle time at work. I believe i used the extrude plug in to get the Superman look. Don't ask what The Angry Negro is. it's an injoke amongst some people I work with.

That's quite nice, Rapier.
Any chance you could describe the process?
I'm very new to AE and have barely even scratched the surface.

The primary elements were enerated in a 3D program. AE is good, but you cant get that look from a 2D app. But the tweaking glows, color bumps, leftter face fade in and out were done in AE, as was some other general tweakage.

There were 2 seperate renders for that. One was the elongated letters, and one was just the letter faces themselves, rendered for the creation of an alpha channel only. using the two together allowed for multiple insances of the long blur letters made more vibrand by blending modes, and the alpha channel of the second animation allowed for the face of the letters to go from trnaparant to having some opacity. The rest was a simply glow, with timed keyframes on opacityies and other attributes to create the whole.

AE is not true 3d in that layers have dimensions but not true depth. For example a flat plane can be created and rotated within AFX but a sphere cannot. Though this is possible with 3rd party plugins. I did this with just Motion and it looks ok as a still but not convincing in action. IMHO Rapier is right on, a combo of 3d animation and 2d compositing would do the trick.

Hey, Noah, that's a cool font. Is it a system font?
I assume you did this with the Light Rays filter in Motion. I've been playing around in Motion and have gotten close with some help using a sequence replicator.

Yes- that's Light Rays and Extrude and doubled onto a second layer with no effects/text only. Font is Gil Sans.
