SuperBowl Thread - Colts vs. Saints

So my Colts made it to the SuperBowl today and the Saints squeaked in thanks to several gifts from the Vikings and the officials.

Let the smack talk/predictions/commentaries begin....

I'm not a big NFL guy but I do watch on occasion. The NHL is more my thing.

Can you guys explain something to me? How is it that a coin toss is allowed to largely decide the outcome of the game?

Half the team sits down and watches as they win/lose? Seems to lose the 'TEAM' aspect in OT when half of them don't even get to play??

Much like shootouts in the NHL, which are not allowed in the playoffs at all.
Terrible way to decide such an important game.

Your Colts beat my Ravens. Damn you to hell Chris F!:kali::Drogar-Shock(DBG): :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Since neither my Jets or Vikings closed the deal...I'm thinking the Colts are the stronger team.

I don't think a shoot out, which I also don't like, is the same as a coin toss to see who gets possession first. It's not like the coin toss decides who gets to go first in a sudden death field goal competition to decide the outcome of the game. There are 11 guys out there for the kickoff and 11 guys out there playing offense or defense. NFL teams carry 53 players but only 11 play at a time. Saying all of them need to play in OT is like saying you can't end an OT game in hockey until every line has been substituted in.

As for the coin toss largely deciding the outcome of the game that's not true. IIRC the percentages for winning the game if you win the coin toss is like 51% or something like that. The team that wins the coin toss has very little, if any actual, advantage over the that doesn't.

I disagree. In the NHL OT every player has a chance to at least play. Depending on who the coach puts on of course but that's normal in both sports. In the NFL one Offensive line doesn't even get a chance to step on the field in most cases. Sorry, that just seems wrong to me.

They should each have an equal amount of chances to score. Hell, even in crappy NHL shootouts each team still has the same amount of opportunities.
Last night I watched one offensive line get a 'second' chance due to a coin toss, the other team just sat and watched.

I just don't think that's fair.

Just my thoughts on what I saw.

And studies don't show anything because one can never predict what Favre would have done with his line had they gone first.

Just seems odd to me.

PS- Just let them all play until someone wins! Then we'll see who the true warriors are. :)

Funny, down here in New Orleans a lot of people were pissed at the refs for the same thing, just in the other direction... :kali: :Drogar-KnockedOut(D I remember at one point a fan near the field stood up and screamed at the refs "You're cheating us and you know it!" haha

From a filmmakers perspective, the Saints have the best story by far. They're a symbol for New Orleans' recovery. The Colts, sorry, but they're just another NFL team :D . I say this even though the Manning's all went to my high school. I didn't care about football before Hurricane Katrina (not even the Saints), but after that incredible post-storm season and that game against the Ravens... If you lived here, you'd know what they mean to the city.

Let's just say that the Saints going to the Superbowl probably will do more for the city's mental health than anything else could. And if they won, I think we just about die. The Colts have had their Superbowls. Now it's our turn.

As soon as that kick went through the goalposts every phone in the city became essentially inoperable. The system was literally overloaded with people calling each other. I think that says a lot right there.

There is an advantage to winning the coin toss actually, I think its only about 60% but it may be a bit higher. Regardless I think they overtime format should be changed dramatically. Give a boot to the "golden goal" mentality and go to high-school/college overtime rules.
The college overtime rules are fair, and provide much more tension and excitement.
Here is a simple article explaining college rules if you don't know them.

My Cowboys are gone. And now my Brett Favre is gone, I hope he doesn't retire!
I think the colts will win, Manning is way too good. Plus, Manning is my favorite QB on par with Brett Favre.
Sorry NOLA, looks like you'll have to find another method to recover your spirit!

$5 bucks on Manning, I mean the Colts.

I'm not a NFL fan much, a few occasions I'll watch some football. But like the superbowl I'll for sure be watching the Saints take it to the win!

all I know is that they stole that game from my vikings :(

I wanted the Vikings to win that game too, but I don't believe it was stolen.
Vikings should not have been ANYWHERE near the saints, points wise. Way too many fumbles and turnovers.
Brett Favre's interception at the end was one of many mistakes that changed the outcome of the game.

Now those rules make perfect sense!

Never made sense to me that about 30% of the time only one team touches the ball in NFL OT.

I think both teams (Saints and Vikings) played pretty poorly. This was certainly far from the best game for the Saints this season. Very far.
