Hey all

got this problem here, will post some screenshots, we got our Super16 film sent to the lab and when it came back some scenes have this problem on it where its kind of a Ghosting/Blending/Frame Bobble and like pulsing, encountered this before last year and once again it is back, is the problem anything anyone has encountered before? it is doing my head in! are my clapper loader's doing it wrong? also its a new AATON XTR we are shooting on and brand new Kodak Stock Vision3 200t...

Any help will be greatly appreciated! :crybaby:

Have you looked at the negative with a lupe? Is it in the negative, or is it a transfer artifact? Looks like frame judder which can be caused by too tight a film loop in the gate causing drag. This could be camera load or telecine transfer issue.

Yes, if this is actually on the film, you might have a registration pin issue.

Did you do a registration test before shooting?

That is quite a bit of slop, imo. I've seen some registration pin issues and typically, from what I remember, the offset wasn't that far, but hey, that was way back in film school. I've shot film and have been an AC on some film productions since then, but have never had any registration issues, so I can fortunately say I'm not in expert in this problem. I have a registration test chart in my garage but it rarely gets used. Funny enough it looks like the checkered lattice from the first couple of images you submitted above.

thanks for the quick replys guys, well having the lab look over there stuff tomorrow, then im guessing we might then get them to have a look at the negative too after that, we did have some magazine issues where it was loosing perfs, one time it went down to 12 which is dangerously tight, but its weird because its only these few scenes that are terrible and lots of others are perfect even though im sure the bits where it was tight and making weird noises there was no ghosting like this...

we didnt do a registration test, my bad on that part. it could be that lab? it could be us? who knows im completely lost at the moment but im sure its the lab.

If the ghosting was more of a smear, especially in highlights, I would have guessed it to be an offset mirror shutter. But that is not that case. I'd diagnosis it a registration issue. Keep us updated what the lab says.

Sorry that happened to you! :(

Well, if it is on the neg it is surely not the lab.
It actually does look like a slightly misaligned shutter to me on some frames, but not everywhere - some appear to have a cleaner ghost image and less smear. Also, misaligned shutter would be apaprent on all scenes and you say some of the scenes are perfect. So probably not a shutter issue. Small frame caps don't help judge it better either.
If you are lucky it will be a scanning issue and not related to registration.

QuIck update guys sending the negs back to the lab for them to re-do the telecine seems there was something wwrong on there end, hopefully this fixes the issue, if not I will repost back here anyways let you'll know

hey guys got it back from the lab, seems it isnt nothing on there end, i may suggest that maybe one of our magazines we used may have been faulty or the cause of this problem? as i think it is for an older AATON XTR, but will find out again soon as we are sending off more footage, still really in the dark about this problem, if anyone knows of anyone in the industry that can identify and name this problem it would be much appreciated! ive never seen this before and i dont think there is anything on the internet about it...
