Super 8 Processing

I searched this fourm and I couldn't find it so I'll post it here.

For all you super 8 fans out there I found out that Wal-Mart still processes super 8 film. For around 8 bucks too. It takes about 2-3 weeks to process because they send it to Fuji. You get it back on a dvd.

I also found out that a local Savon's does it too and theres takes about a week and they do it in their store.

Just thought I should share that with everyone. If this information has been posted before, i'll delete this thread.

Take care! :)

That is awesome. I have been wanting to shoot a Super8 project for a long time, but had no idea that processing would be so affordable.

Time to bust out the Yashica!

Is it a Data DVD or a normal DVD, like you put it in your DVD player and it plays? I'd rather have a Data DVD with the clips in a raw format like DV or better yet on a MiniDV tape.

I'm not too sure, it was my friend who sent it out so we will see. That was one of the questions he forgot to ask the guy. Will let you know as soon as it comes in.

Yeah I'm curious about this myself. I have a Super8 camera I bought months ago, but haven't shot anything yet.

topic hasnt been touched upon in a while?
so any news on how the processing turned out??

What about developing? Could they do that to. Forgive me if I'm not making any sense. I just had a super handed to me the other day and wanted to know where and how expensive it would be to develop and process super 8 footage.

Just chip in my two cents here, I processed ninety percent of the super-8 footage I shot for my film Frankensteins Bloody Nightmare at Wal-Mart and I don't know about the DVD thing someone mentioned earlier but all of my film arrived back in a little white box on a nice white spool, the same as it would if I'd sent it directly to Dwayne's in Parsons, KS, the only U.S. lab left which can process Kodachrome Super-8 and 16mm.

You see what Wal-Mart does is ship it to Fuji who in turns ships it to Dwaynes (http://www.k14movies.com) and then sends it back through to the store. Most Wal-Marts which use Fuji seem hip to this; all one had to do was write "Process K14, Super-8 Film" on the mailer but I'm not sure of the procedure now that Kodachrome has been discontinued. Also it used to be $4.88 but they may have upped it to $8 now, I haven't really tried it using Kodak's Kodachrome replacement stock but Dwayne's will process either one. They're nice people.

Ulitmately it was a good deal, four bucks and change with no shipping cost versus nine dollars plus shipping if you sent it to Dwaynes directly and despite what one may think of Wal-Mart or their photo division most of the work is really in Fuji's hands and Wally World never lost or screwed up a single roll I sent them which I has actually happened to me before when I sent things directly to a lab (not Dwayne's but some other place for plus-x). Of course dealing with a lab directly and using expedited shipping cuts down on the risk factors involved so that should definitely be taken into account.

It's always been $4.88 for me, but I drop it off at Cala-Foods. And this is only good for Super 8 Kodachrome and the new Ektachrome stock. As long as the mailer is for Fuji at the store, you are good. Yeah, they send to Dwaynes. And you get your film back, not a DVD. I've gotten hundreds of feet processed this way, and they have only messed up once.

Don't ask the people at the store about it. They have no idea. Just put it in the mailer and write SUPER 8 KODACHROME in big letters. Fuji will know what to do.

Yeah, Wal-Mart employees don't know jack about it. I decided that shipping directly to Dwayne's is better because I had 6 day turnaround from the Sunday I put it in the mailbox out till the Saturday I received it in the mail. It's still only $9.00 for direct processing and it's quicker and less chance of getting lost.

Also, I don't know why Dwayne's site says they only do Kodachrome because I just sent them a roll of Ekta 64T and they processed it. Ekta 64T is some nice looking stock despite what the old K40 people say.

Hey Guys I'm starting to ptoduce this super 8 shoot... I been shooting video for a couple of years and I'm out of the picture a little bit where do you think is the best place to process super 8 to transfer later to video?
Also do you guys know how much it will be to do cross process? please let me know

Wow, I haven't been on this thread in such a long time. Sorry, I haven't been around. I gave up on the Walmart processing, did it once and since then haven't been able to get the "new" guys there to get them to send it out.

For those of you in the Samy's Camera of Orange Country area they will now ship your super 8 stook free of charge to get it developed at Pro8mm. They also started to sell Pro8mm's 100D stock which includes processing. I know Pro8mm is not the best place by any means but if for some reason you can't find the time to head up to LA then this might be a good alt for some of you.

Hope that helps.

Folks... did a little experiment at my local Savon... I packaged up two Super 8's. One GAF cartridge and one Kodachrome cartridge. The GAF was sent back with a "service unavailable"sticker in one week. Two weeks later the Kodachrome was sent back in a bigger envelope from YESVIDEO saying service not provided. I will go to Walmart later to continue my little experiment. Stay tuned.

I just wanted to clear up that when you send in your film for processing it should not come back on a DVD only. If you want to get your film processed and then transferred to DVD, you still should get your film back.

DVD is the worst method out there for transferring your original film to IF you plan on editing it in any way. Mini-dv would be the most logical format at this point in time.

Hey folks.. the fun continues... Anyone in the Burbank Ca area.... I talked to the photo manager of Walgreens and she assured me that the will process Super 8mm... she went on infact to tell me that they will process all types of k-40 and k-14 film.... So I drove there with my cartridge...while driving there.. the manager of CVS ( just across the street from Walgreens) called me and said that they would do it also for $8.99 and that it would take 2 weeks. I flipped a coin and chose CVS. Stay tuned with the results. I'm sure that all local CVS and Walgreens will do it...
