Sunny for Cloudy?

Is there a way to shoot something in bright sunlight but in post make it look it was cloudy instead? I don't need to show the sky. I want to composite a live shot with a still photograph image. The still image is under cloudy skies and its going to be sunny all week long here. I am guess it would follow the same principles as shooting Day for Night.

Re: Sunny for Cloudy?

Good luck with that, I don't think there's going to be any way to convincingly pull that off. Bright sunlight = sharp shadows, overcast/cloudy = no shadows.

If you know you need the no-shadow look, that's when you use an overhead silk or butterfly, to turn the sharp sunlight into a diffused soft source. But you'd have to do that at the time of shooting, not in post.

Unless I'm totally wrong and someone knows how to do this?

Re: Sunny for Cloudy?

I'm not sure about how to approach this in terms of post-production, but as far as shooting goes Barry nailed it with the overhead and butterfly reference.

Or, you could just lie in wait for an overcast day and spring into action like a DVX Warrior when preferable atmospheric conditions occur.

Re: Sunny for Cloudy?

Your best bet is to try to 'silk' off an area where you are shooting

Sun and shadow removal is possible in post (and has been done on some feature films) but it's a painful process that take a fair bit of work. You need to rotoscope the sunlit areas and color adjust to match shadow side.

Not clear from your description- Sounds like you're adding a still image of an object shot in cloudy weather and comping it into a live action plate? You could also consider adjustign contrast on still.

Re: Sunny for Cloudy?

Are you shooting this in front of a Blue/Green screen? I am asking to see if the back ground matters.

You could look for a location that is out of direct sunlight. In the shadow of a building perhaps. Just remember that you are now using bounced light and the color of the (sun)light will be effected by the color of the bounce surface. For example: light bounceing off of a green wall will have a green cast.

Re: Sunny for Cloudy?

I hope you already considered retaking the picture under sunlight... :P

Sometimes there are stupid solutions disguised between tons of production planning and equipment... ;D

Re: Sunny for Cloudy?

just my luck its cloudy today so I will just get my shot and composite it with the photograph...the shot is just going to be a body of water like a pond or river...

Re: Sunny for Cloudy?

:D :D...come to Stockholm...u wont have any problem in getting a sunny forecast for a cloudy outcome. ;D ;D
