Hello everyone,

Does anyone have any experience in shooting the sun? I want a wide shot in mid day. I'm shooting with my DVX. What do I need to get, and what is the best time of day?

Thank you,

Jeremy

magic hour (depending season of year) but now its from 16:00 to 17:30 where i live.
Shooting at 12 is a no no usually

Thanks Ogrus...But what actually do I need to do as well? Do I put my ND filter on the highest setting? Do I need to buy a ND filter, UV filter? What do I need to do to protect my camera from getting burned? And still get the best shot...blue skies, white clouds, and a bright sun :) ???

Well a polarizer filter is a must!!!!! anyways, if you're going to shoot into the sun it will be all blown out at noon. Shooting the sun is a hard thing. If you pop ND filters on all the way and lower exposure, the image will be very dark. Experiment!
As i said, try shooting at the magic hours from early morning to late noon
forget from 12:00! to 15:00!
Im no expert, but i have some great sun shots shooting at 16:30h.
Im sure other people here with more knowledge will be of great help

Thanks again Ogrus,

So a polarizer will protect the camera? I won't get sun dot burn, or anything else?

Thanks again.

They sell 100x and 1000x (and stronger) ND filters for shooting the sun and for long exposure still photography, but those are to get actual detail on the sun, stars, etc. Any landscape with the sun, the sun is going to be blown out. If you stop/ND down to where the sun is properly exposed, the landscape and sky would be very dark.

Probably the 1/64 ND, stopped down a little, and a polarizer.

A pola wouldn't have an effect when shooting into the sun, it would only act as a ND filter. I would expose for the sky (Probably need a few ND filters in there). A ND grad might look cool though.

Thats a shot from a music video i did a few years ago with the DVX. Its a dolly move running across the gang members and the sun coasts across their plaques.
