Sun Gun Boogie

I'm going to be doing some run & gun shooting in various places, particularly indoors w/o permission.

Now, I have some reflectors and a few suckers- uh I mean, "volunteers" to hold them and I'll take a crack at getting as much from the available light as possible.

What I really want to look into though is getting a sun gun. This should hopefully help out on my closeups and medium shots.

First off a few questions:

What is the lights powersource?
Do they have to be mounted to the camera?
What models and accessories do you reccommend?

Ideally, I would rather not have to mount them on my camera, and plugging them into a wall won't do, as my filming style would prohibit being tethered to a wall. I'm hoping they have an independent powersource, like a rechargeable battery of something.

I searched online and came across an article by the brilliant Walter Graff.

He cites the Frezzolini 50 watt w/ softbox as his favorite (also namedropping an Anton baure light). Would any of you reccommend this light as well?

Also does anyone have any experiences using sun guns. Do you find that they make a huge difference?

Those lights won't do anything outside. Your best bet is a 1200 watt par and a 3000w generator, which are a few hundred a day. I'd stick with reflectors.

RUN AND GUN EH'. What I have used in the past is a 200 watt jokerbug w/handgrip attached , connected to battery belt (get extra batteries !) I used a very small softbox, I think it was like 10"x12" or 12"x 15".. Can't remember the size exactely.. Works great, you can pull the softbox if you need to, and try a small piece of Opal.. Good Luck.

As I said, they'll only be used indoors.

And sometimes at night.

Heres what I'm looking at from B&H. It says it was made for the Canon XL1s, but this is going to be handheld anyways so I don't think it matters.

It's a bit pricey.

Is it worth it?

EDIT:

I just realized it's going to cost me another $150 to get a soft box.

~$850 for 50 watts of light?

Is there any cheaper alternative. I really need a small portable light that runs on batteries that I can use at the drop of a hat. I'm willing to spend a few hundred, but $850 seems ridiculous.

Can anyone help?
