Suitable Fee - Industrial Video - Advice needed

Advice needed from the pros...

If a company asked you to produce an industrial video with exterior and interior footage of their manufacturing facilities, a few key interviews with their sales and customer service personnel, what would be a fair fee? Final running time will be 3-10 minutes at most. Purpose is to distribute to potential clients.

Will require 1/2 day of prep
1 day of shooting
3 days of post

Distribution of finished product on DVD.

Will use my DVX100A and some lighting
Cutting with Final Cut Pro HD on my Mac

Company doesn't have a lot to spend and I want to stand out from the $4-$10,000 per project crowd.

Any advice, real world recommendations ?

Keep in mind that the project will probably take longer than you think.  Are you dealing with the DVD duplication house?  How about graphics and packaging?  What about music (licensing) and narration?  How many re-edits will you do based on the client's wishes? Be realistic about the amount of time and set a day rate you can live with plus expenses.

$4000-$10,000 is completely realistic for a project like this, so I'm not sure why you'd want to stand out by low balling the price. If it's for a favor/friend or you just want to build your reel, you can drop the price, but otherwise you're not doing yourself or the business any favors.

Thanks for the advice, Barry. It helps. Time to crunch the time and budget numbers.....

Barry_S, in your opinion, would the price range change if the medium was a web video stream? Basically a link off of the customers website to the hosted video, via a stream to Windows, Real or QuickTime players? Just curious if you (or anyone else) feels that the medium might dictate a change in pricing. I guess the same amount of effort is implied for the final product. Maybe a savings on DVD production costs etc...

Sorry to chrislaing if I got too off topic.

Whether you're going to tape, DVD, or web, the basic project price would be the same--as long as the level of production doesn't change. The client would be billed extra for building a DVD or to deliver streaming video files depending on the requirements.

Valid points from both of you. I've crunched the numbers and will take Barry's advice, bidding the job at $7,500....the voice of reason from my wife reminded me about Murphy's Law. Everything takes twice as long and costs twice as much as we project...
