I've just bought a DVX100B; this is my very first camcorder and, since I studied film language for 8-9 years, I would like to know how I should start to shoot: better shoot without lights (in the beginning), or is better to study light techniques before shoot? better try to make a short or better shoot at something real (a child playing football)?
I mean, my objective is to make short movie, but I have many problems with lights: where should I concentrate my effort?

OmaR, welcome to the board.

The answer is just shoot. Get that puppy out(camera), you will soon find the many possibilities/ problems in all areas of production. Your time to experiment is now. You want to make a short - do it. It all about making mistakes and learning.:crybaby:

Its a long journey my friend, welcome aboard.

ok, but do you suggest me to not consider artificial lights at the beginning, and make a "non-filmic" short, in order to learn to shoot (I mean, being able to make understand the viewer what's going on the screen), or is better to make an effort to obtain a "cine-look" from the beginning?

How long did it take you to make the first good short movie?

There is alot to learn when making a film. At first I got other people in like a Director of Photography and started to learn from them. Get a story together first and then look around for collaborators, that way you'll learn what your good at and who you need. If your itching to shoot something, keep it simple at first. Do tests, use available lighting as much as poss...the sun...Think of what you want to say with your film and work out the best way to do it. I'm starting a directors FAQ. Hang around...

As in regards to making my first good film...people have enjoyed my work...but after every projects finished, I still see fault. I'm still striving.

do you want to be a director or a cinematographer? a director has to worry about the camera and lights, but also, actors and their performance. if you want to be a cinematographer, you should experiment as much as possible under all kinds of lighting conditions, as well as with lenses, filters, etc.
