Suggestions/help with Obie light.

I have a shoot coming up and I would really like to get the obie light effect happening. I can't really afford a new light, such as the Kamio or anything, but I do have access to a pretty good selection of lights, 650's, 1ks, 2ls, Kino Flo (4x4) a Diva, Mole Fays, various other soft lights. What I don' really have is small low wattage lights, which I am under the impression works best. Or am I wrong? If I just set the key right will I get what I want?

Any pointers or heads-up would be greatly appreciated.

The cheapest way to simulate Kamio type light would be with rope lighting from Home Depot, runs about 10 bucks I think. You coil it up and ad some light diff and gel to the tone you need.

Some of the kino light have extensions so you can remove the bulbs and places them in a square shape or tic tact toe shape to get close to the same lighting as a Kamio. You can cover the parts not wanted with duvy so you only have a small square of flo light.

The purpose of the Obie light is to create a reflection in the eyes without really effecting exposure. So yes, low wattage, small fixtures used to do the trick. A 150 or 200 watt Ltm pepper on a squeezer works great. On Siren (www.sirenthemovie.com), I used a surefire flashlight for an obie light in one shot. Now they use Kamio's, (btw, you can get ring flourescents at most hardware stores pretty cheap. The color temp may not be perfect, but if it's just for a reflection it will work) and other types of lights for more elaborate effects. Look at the first time we see Galadriel in Lord of The Rings. They used a pattern of christmastree lights around the lense to create the glimmer in her eyes.
