Suggestions for rental house expansion

Spec-Comm

DVXuser Sponsor
We are looking to expand our selection of cameras and equipment available for rental.

I wanted to get opinions from the DVXuser community on what cameras and equipment we should get. What camera can you not wait to get your hands on? What equipment do you regret buying? What would you rather rent instead of own?

Take a look at our current camera rental selection.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

What about getting one or two high speed cameras? You probably won't rent them out every day, but there is a call for high speed cameras out there. Plus it's a selling point for you. Obviously, Phantoms are the "gold" standard, but they are pricey. Maybe a more reasonably cost one for your company to rent out.

The HDV Sony cameras are the workhorses of the unscripted world right now, and, frankly, the competition is terrible in the upkeep department. You're near Silver Spring? Still using F900s, HDX900s for sit-down interviews in unscripted too. VariCam 2700s and 3000s are solid rental cameras. Have stacks of GoPros and Contours available for nothing or sell them.

You're going to need a lot more camera support equipment. At the very least, a quite good tripod for every camera you have (better than Manfrotto, if at all possible, and certainly beefier than a 701), and also some good mics. At most of the rental houses I've worked with, you can get a bare camera, but the usual package is a camera, 4 batteries, a tripod, a shotgun on the camera, and (in your case) P2 cards. Anything less than that is going to leave a production searching elsewhere for gear.

It is great you mention this actually, we have been discussing getting a more exhaustive collection of accessories, and sound and lighting equipment.

Thank you guys for the advice, we will certainly be discussing everything mentioned here, and keep the help coming!

Yes, I didn't address AKS, but for tripods, it almost must be Sachtler (System 12 - 18) for video production rentals. Naturally, you'll want O'Connor for film work (like the 1030 for light HD cinema and 2060 / 2065 new version for film / large HD rigs). Cased-up broadcast HD monitors, AB or IDX battery systems with quad / tandem chargers and a la carte extra batteries, wireless video, paintboxes, Chrosziel matte boxes, 4x4 and 4x5.65 filtration suite, Israeli / Noga arms, external DVRs, quality BNC cable extensions are other essentials.

What is your selection of sound sound equipment like?

Our sound equipment as of now consists of the Panasonic AJ-MC700 Shotgun Mic, but we are hoping to acquire more soon. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you all for the input, we are taking note of all of this and once again, keep the suggestions coming!

We'll be sure to let everybody know when new items are available for rental.
