Suggestions for Blimp Transport/Protection

Hey all,

I'm trying to figure out a travel/protection solution for my Rycote Blimp and Dead Wombat. There's not enough space in my K-tek Boompole Case. I'm looking for input and options on a bag/case that would be able to hold and protect it as well as other audio gear (mics, cables, etc).

What do you recommend and why? Personal anecdotes/experience with things that work are most welcomed!

Things I've tried:

Length of PVC plumbing pipe with a cap on one end and a slot partway along the bottom to let the handle/mount slip in (note that I do this mainly for softies, though I've seen people do it for blimps).

An inexpensive plastic toolbox from the hardware store. Really...this works well as long as you're not flying somewhere.

Pelican 1500 or 1600 (or so) case with divider... so you can place the windscreen (Rycote stuff for me) along with other audio bits into a single case.

Pelican 1720 Rifle case: can fit a short/medium boompole with the zeppelin on it. Other rifle cases work, too.

Tripod bag... for pole + zeppelin.

But for me, it's mostly a Pelican 1510 Carry On case with dividers so I can carry other stuff (backup mixer & recorder, some cables, mounts, etc).

Do you 'Really' need a blimp?
I haven't used a Blimp on location shoots for probably 10+ years now, I just use a Rycote 'softie'

I agree and I don't even own a blimp now.

We still use them outside on Sky sports but mainly on fixed location 416 effects mics.

Jim,

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas. I'll def. have to try out the tool box idea as a low cost, interim solution. Cheers!

I'd find a case with Pick and Pluck (or PNP) Foam. Trace and then pluck out slots for everything you want.

Pelican is the "known" brand and makes nicer ones, e.g. https://www.thepelicanstore.com/cas...hnMcw9UfRjfcuwgWeS-8Zd0DvhDYS-K0aAnXrEALw_wcB

Monoprice hard cases are the cheaper MIC brand. A little bulkier/uglier but they get the job done. (They have several models.)

Thanks for the ideas/suggestions. Do you (or anyone else out there) have any soft case/bag suggestions? Was thinking something like a Cinebag or Tenba solution just for day jobs/local travel and then a Pelican for long term storage/serious travel.
