Well i have been lurking these boards for a year or more waiting for the time and money to come around so i can join the elite dxvuser club. Its been a lonnnng wait. Tell you something else, all of you guys that post, be it test clips, information, reviews, opinoins, shorts or music videos, have inspired and kept me motivated that one day i could do the same thing as you all. Thanks a lot for that, you guys are awesome.

Well yay both time and money have come around and i would like to purchase a dvx. So i start looking around at prices and all the new stuff coming out lately. SG35, letus35 and HD mod and wow things are looking good for the dvx.

Anyways i was wondering how would you guys feel about purchasing a dvx + 35mm adapter to start with. Is it an undertaking learning both at the same time?

and also who here has over 170 hours with the dvx? Any mechanical problems with higher hour cams?

Thanks a lot guys. :D

If you practice, one day you, too, can post your sarcastic replies with surgeon-like precision. :)

Welcome aboard, long-time lurker.

Any mechanical problems with higher hour cams?. Please.

heh not really talking about the mini35 but ok. thanks?

i take it your answers are dvx+adapter+beginner=no
and dvx+high hours=bad?

Do a search for a "very" recent thread on DVX hours, and the life of a DVX.

Do you consider 170 hours good, or, bad?

First off, a Mini35 is a 35mm adaptor. Don't quibble over details.

Second, I bought sound equipment and lighting equipment on the same day. There is nothing that says you have to learn both at exactly the same time or all at once. If you can afford it, and you want the effects and look you have seen everyone who has one on this board has talked about, then go for it.

Simple answer: Only you know if you are getting in over your head. Good luck.

ok will do.

Do you think 170 is a lot? I'm asking you because i dont have one.

Instead of trying to master two things at once it might be easier to focus on one thing and as already mentioned, practice practice practice. Also, it's not worth investing thousands of dollars into what might be a part time hobby. It's up to you, but just remember that's there's an equipment graveyard for people who bought cameras, lighting equipment, books, and all of it is just collecting dust.

Dip your toe into the pool first, get accustomed to the cold water, and once you go in, you'll know whether to keep swimming or get out of the pool.

oh i thought the mini35 was a more complex adapter solution than the ones i mentioned.

I'm sure im getting in over my head. But I have to start somewhere i guess.

Ignore 2% of what Pookie says.

He's right though, so this falls into that 98% category.

To answer your questions...
1. A DVX can last about 3000 hours. 170 hours is a lot or a little based upon the kind of use, conditions, and non usage treatment the camera has been through. In the almost unanamous opinion of users here, buy new if you can... If you cannot buy new, 170 should be OK depending upon what sort of conditions it has been used under.

2. Mini 35. There are pros on the board who have been using the original DVX100 since it was released without this addition for professional projects. If a pro has been using the camera stock for paying gigs, it should be good enough to get you off and running. Invest in the DVX book by Barry Green, it will show you how to cheat depth of field. I do not recommend getting a lense adapter for a while. It will take away from your learning how to use the camera and develop style.

Finally, welcome longtime lurker. A lot of us started out that way, but welcome.

One other word of advice, never ask Pookie for an opinion on camera stabilizers, it will give you gear lust and premature checking account shock for about a month to follow. Just a heads up.

You're laughing and I'm trying to figure out who I can kill, what I can pawn, or what my pride is worth in an attempt to get a flyer.

I'm telling you, this man is evil!
