Suggestions for a external monitor purchase.

I'm closer than ever to purchase an external monitor for my EX1 rig. I have posted to various threads in the past about the need for an external monitor but now I think I'm quite ready for one. Here's what I need.

  1. Thinking about the Marshall V-LCD70P-HDA or Manhattan LCD HD071A 7.1" HD Pro
  2. Battery that supports the monitor at least 4 hours or more
  3. Mounting accessories for the battery to my 15mm rods
  4. Mounting accessories for mounting the monitor. I'm thinking about this one but my concern is that it's too short...does not look flexible.
Please give some suggestions/recommendations as to what brand/models I need. I will try to buy this sometime in March or April.

Have you looked at the SmallHD monitor?
http://www.smallhd.com/dp1/

I love mine and use it with the HMC150.
It certainly look really nice. I especially like the frame crop capability feature. I've been looking for an external field monitor to have this feature built in. However, I did not see what the actual resolution is. It did not mention anything about what type of battery/power this monitor is able to accept. It does not mention any picture control capability. Where could I find answers to these questions?

Will something like this be about to mount a battery to my rig?

Okay, this one seems nice but, don't anyone think this will add to the weight?

Thanks for the link. They just emailed me the manual. It's a hard decision between this one and the Manhattan LCD monitor. But I really the frame crop capability of the DP1. I'll see if I can cough up nearly a thousand for this one. I'm still comparing the features of the DP1 and the Manhattan LCD listed in thread. Does anyone have a review of the DP1?

I have been using it for a couple months and I love it. There was someone on this forum doing a review of it but I haven't seen a completed review yet. I have no major complaints, other than the control buttons take some getting used to being on the back side (you have to remember what each one does if you want quick access to things). The company is great relative to support.

I know nothing about the Manhattan.

If you're considering a Marshall 7" for your EX1, go with the V-LCD-70P-3gSDI. It still has the HDA inputs, but allows you to utilize the camera's SDI output as well for better signal quality.

Okay, here are my comparison:

Manhattan:

Price: $589.95
LCD Size: 7.1"
Resolution: 1024x600
Contrast: 500:1
Brightness: 400cd/m2
Viewing Angles: 140/110 degree
I/O: Component, Composit, HDMI, VGA
Power consumption: <20W
Weight: 1.5lbs

Marshall:

Price: $1,299
LCD Size: 7"
Resolution: 800 x 480
Contrast: 400:1
Brightness: 250cd/m2
Viewing Angles: 140/110 degree
I/O: Component, Composit, HDMI, HDSDI, VGA
Power consumption: 12W
Weight: 1.3lbs

DP1:

Price: $989
LCD Size: 8.9"
Resolution: 1280x768
Contrast: 500:1
Brightness: 300cd/m2
Viewing Angles: 178/178 degree
I/O: Component, Composit, HDMI, VGA
Power consumption: <10W
Weight: 1.6lbs

The Marshall is nice with the HDSDI but I pay $709 more than the Manhattan and the resolution was not as high as the Manhatan or the DP1. The brightness was also much lower than the other two. The DP1 consumes even less power and it's bigger size although the DP1's weight is 1.6 versus 1.3. I'm not sure if .3 makes any difference and HDSDI is worth paying $700 or $310 more for the Marshall.

Sounds like the DP1 is the winner based on these criteria listed above but I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay extra $400 for the DP1. Although the DP1 does come with two battery. I'm not sure how long each included battery last.

Besides the specification above, what else should I be considering? What about customer service, life of the product, support of the product etc? Can anyone shine some light into these and other considerations?

The average battery life on the DP1 is about 2 hours. You can charge the battery while using it if that's practical and you get two anyway, so you can pretty much use it uninterrupted. Can't comment on the other two monitors.

I'm looking at the Manhattan 7.1 and may have it by Wed. Will let you know how it works!

Lor,

Love your comparison. I have also been looking at the same monitors. Keep one thing in mind, the SmallHD is currently backordered until Feb 12th.:(

I think I've seen that somewhere on their site too. However, I won't be ordering until sometime March or April.

Manhattan 7"

Manhattan 7"

Well guys ordered the Manhattan 7". Something that no one seems to notice is that the 7" has 2 (Yes 2) HDMI inputs. with Picture-in-Picture display. Very cool for multi-cam shoots.

I also got the Panasonic Battery mount. All from ManhattanLCD.com
They have a sale on the 7"

Will have Wed for Thurs and Friday shoot. Will let you know how it goes next week.
:grin::grin::grin:

Thanks for the info. Although that certainly is a really nice feature, I rarely shoot multi-cam and if I do, I'm not sure how practical is it since one camera will be quite a distance away from another camera.

Has anyone seen or heard of the reliability of any of these camera? How does it stand up to field shooting? How's the screen? Is it easily scratch? Do I need to pay for special reinforcement of the screen so it does not get scratch? Do I need to use special liquid to clean it? I know that the DP1 showed a tire on top of the DP1 monitor but that's just the side up and not flat on the ground.

Okay, I was watching the frame crop capability of the DP1 and although I loved it, how do I make sure the 2.35:1 crop guide on the DP1 will line up when I apply the crop in my NLE? Another word, how do I match the two so that they are in sync? I'm using Avid MC.

Okay, I think I've finally made my decision to buy the SmallHD. However, I need help in the following:

1. batteries that will work with the monitor
2. mounting accessories of the battery to 15mm rods
3. a mounting accessories of the monitor to my Redrock Micro sholder ( I believed it's 15mm rod)

Please give me a link to the site so I can check out the price.

Thank you.

Okay, I was looking at Zacuto's site for an articulating arm mount for my monitor and it cost over $400. It's a bit more than what I can afford plus there are quite a few moving parts than I wanted. Okay, so would the microArm work? However, I still need a way to mount it to my 15mm rod.
