Looking for an external mic for a race car in car camera. Would like to stay under $100.

Camera is a Contour+

The car has an open exhaust so kinda on the loud side.

The mic will be inside the cockpit so won't be subjected to too much wind, but driver and passenger windows are removed so some wind will enter the cockpit but not much.

Not sure what kind of mic would be the best in this situation.

Stereo vs mono
Directional vs Omnidirectional

Inside of car, you get some hum with a bit engine sound from my experience of shooting cars, both on recording the engine and the dialogue inside of the car.
Better record outside and inside .... I used OKtava 012, and 416 for inside... Got almost same result, especially for racing cars, Porsche etc...there are not too much noise (engine) inside of the car.... like you cover your ear when you are outside ... hum with the engine sound. Outside, I used 418, lots of time I prefer set X Y, but of course, lots of ppl request MS, both producing amazing result, especially the car bypass you ... you got left and right....stereo effect. Don't try to move your 418 at the same time. ...just like it go through from the side to mid and side.....

Cheers

I use 4 tracks, a stereo X-Y inside of the car, and SM58s work well inside the engine bay and on the exhaust.
