I was thinking, a lot of us put much time into researching the best pricing on various video items. What about adding a "Deals" forum where people can post especially good pricing and specials they've found? It wouldn't overlap with Marketplace because it wouldn't be for selling. Dealmac.com is a similar idea, but it's not a message board.

This might make too much sense for this thread, P-dog, but here goes....

I think your deal forum is a good idea.

And back to the nonsense:

It gives Bricey another forum to whore himself in. Win-win!

That sounds like a good idea.

I have been throwing around the idea of an equipment section. There are a hell of a lot of options when going into any direction. Like Audio= mics, mixers, windscreens, and Video = Lens attachments, tripods (legs and heads) follow focus (don’t even know what that is), Matt boxes, media, and Lighting (fresnels vs fluorescents vs ???), bounce cards, diffusers, and so on.

Hell, I don't even know the names of the things I need or would benefit me, let alone their function, so I don't even know where to begin looking.

A comprehensive breakdown and explanations of all the differing types of equipment used in all aspects of Production would be one hell of an informational resource. And, people who offer products like 35mm adapters, Mateboxes, tripods even a particular brand of reliable DVDs (Taiyo Yuden, yeah buddie!) could showcase wares, and do brand comparisons.

I dont have a clue how we would get that started, but I’m sure it’s feasible. Kind of like an EVS or B&H with definitions. If some of the more knowledgeable of tech among us put in only two or three explanations to start, we’d be well on our way.

A "deals" section sounds like a good idea, but I suspect that will open the forum up to lots of spam... not to mention the endless number of people posting links of places to buy an HVX for $3500 (ac adapter, battery, lens, and CCD array not included of course).

The owners of the board currently allow tasteful sponsorships... thankfully they have spared us from the barrage of pop-ups that are ruining other sites... but I would think that a "deals" section might not appeal to the companies who are flipping a couple nickels to help sponsor this place.

Sure it's possible that those companies could be featured in the deals section... but if I were a business owner I'd be a little hesitant to help fund the promotion of any competitors.

And "deals" aren't usually permanent, so who'd be the one to check each to see if it's still available, and delete them when not?

Just to give the other side of the issues raised:

1. "Deals" are already mentioned in forums like DVX Hwr, HVX Hwr, Audio, Lighting, etc. You'd only be adding a new category of info, not a new type of info.

2. There's lots of outdated info on the board anyway...is an outdated deal any less useful? (I think it's actually quite useful, to see ranges of prices and discounting patterns. Like the "completed" listings on eBay.

3. If outdated deals are a problem, you could ask members to police their own items and post expirations.

4. Wouldn't the sponsors mind that the board offers lists of authorized Panny dealers? I'm sure those lists are used mostly as starting points for price comparisons, and the sponsors might not have the best deals.

Anyway, I enjoy the hunt, so I was mostly trying to offer the benefit of my research to others. If it isn't wanted, so be it.

I'm thinking the current system of posting "deals" in their respective areas is working fine, and the posts decay at a steady natural rate in direct proportion to their relevancy.
