Suggested Beginning Settings

Ok. Just got my DVX100A and am starting to get familiar with it. I have been reading through this forum for a few months now and would like to get some recommendations on what settings to start out with. I know that it matters what and where you will be shooting but I know that by now maybe some people have found their favorite settings that they work with to achieve what they want. I, of course, am wanting to get the film look so I know I will be in the 24P realm but was wondering what other settings have others found that have given them the results they were looking for. For ex: detail level, ped level, etc. I am trying to narrow down my time in getting the results I want but since there is so much that can be adjusted I really need a jump to get me close to the settings that I will probably end up working with. What I will mostly be shooting is music videos for local groups that some will be inside (where I can light accordingly) and some outside (which will be more difficult). Thanks for you input.

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

You know, the default settings right out of the box for the 24p modes (f5 and f6) are very good and you are good to go immediately with those settings. That's how I started off and then began tweaking from there.

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

I wonder why no one likes to share their settings. I've been to a couple of boards and whenever someone asks this same question, there's no response. Think folks don't want to give away their secrets for success?

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

The settings and their results are very subjective. I don't think that people are necessarily reluctant to share their settings. It's just that we are always experimenting and coming up with what works given the situation. The settings out of the box are really not bad at all, and with some minor experimentation, you can find what works for you. :)

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

how about we start sharing what we have tried?

i'm not big on experimenting with settings because the default settings seem to work well and i always have a hard time testing settings, i get bored and move on to doing something real.

i guess i tend to learn better doing real projects with real results.

i use default f6 and i use the in camera squeeze mode (dvx-100a)

i do use warmcards (www.warmcards.com) i'm not affiliated with them, i have a friend who uses them and i liked the way they look.

i'm just getting into real filters now with a matte box.

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

I've just changed my settings to match the recommended ones at DVFilm.com

Hope that helps.

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

What is the point of the warm cards? If you white balance properly, can't you jsut warm the scene in post?

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

I think people don't share their settings..is mostly b/c we are all too lazy ;)

Re: Suggested Beginning Settings

Well, since I started this thread I only felt that I should chime back in and thank everyone for their comments. I have since had the opportunity to shoot a small local group to just get familiar with the DVX and see just how it would look. I did start on the F5 and dropped the detail down 1 notch. We were inside and had a couple of 250W fresnel lights. We also had one that we used different jels on to experiment. Since I have yet to get a tripod (Just about got the money for that), I had to improvise. Also, since I don't have a dolly and track I wanted to do some real slow zooming in on the performers face during certain songs. I quickly found that doing a real slow zoom is most difficult using the ring. I have seen the follow focus that you add, but what about real slow zooms? Anyway, they were just estatic about how it looked when we played it back to the tv through the s-video connection. I was pleasantly pleased but can see where much more can be improved upon. But it is my first (not good enough to post here yet) and very encouraging. Just makes me want to spend more money for other items. We'll see how it goes. Obviously, the group wants to do it again and make a DVD of it. Who knows. Maybe some money will come of it. Keep posting you guys.....

I found only one bit of advice on that site: 24PA and Thin Vertical Detail. Is that it, or are there other recommended settings somewhere?
