Such thing as a silent blank firing gun?

And if so, recommend any vendors? I am shooting a huge gun fight and I would like to avoid any noise issues. but I still want a blank firing gun because they look real with the chamber and everything.

Thanks!

Well, the most obvious (and safest and cheapest) choice would be airsoft pistols with blowback actions (so the slide moves back and forth). They are mostly silent, look real enough, and the movement is fairly realistic. However, they wont cause flashes (and they wont eject empty casings) - but the muzzle flashes are very easy to add in post production.

However, you could buy some airsoft pistols along with some post-elements (like Video Copilot fx) which easily allow you to add in ejecting brass cases and muzzle flashes (this would still work out cheaper than getting a bunch of blank firing pistols). Other programs like After Effects and and FXHOME allow you to add in in muzzle flashes very easily. With some good editing you it would be hard to tell the difference.

Have a look at this guy Freddie Wong on youtube - he does all his gun battles with airsoft and post effects.

yeah I'd go post effects- they look cool and you won't burn yourself or get shot or arrested.

Simon beat me to it. Freddie's the man to see. Specifically check out this vid on his second YouTube channel, which is all BTS, tutorials, and tips. This one is about creating muzzle flare, and he's got a couple about gunshot sound design here and here. I also see he did one on blood hits in post.

And all you need is After Effects. (Plus maybe a few Lynda.com tutorlals.)

Wow. Gun action has come along way since I was making action scenes in middle school! Imagine being a kid with these tools at your disposal... oh wait, we basically are ;)

Thanks so much everyone. I'm 100% sold on post/pellet. Just one more Q about brass, can anyone point my in the right direction? I can get some real brass for dropping by his feet and what not, but I definitely need it flying out of the gun in post but if I'm doing slow mo shouldn't you be able to see it exit the chamber?

Have a look at video copilot (I think they have some brass elements). Otherwise After Effects / or a 3d program would be your best option.

If you are close-up on the action of the weapon, yes, you probably would want to see something being ejected. But to make your job easier.......consider what angles you plan to film from. Being opposite the ejection port will make it easier to realistically put that brass in. You don't need to see the actual piece of brass in the port, to sell it being ejected. Same with frontal shots.

Now those slo-mo c/u shots.........yes, to make them realistic using a prop/airsoft, that will be difficult.
