what do you prefer to watch subtitled than to watch dubbed films.
I personally prefer to watch st. films

I much prefer watching the film subtitled because I like to hear the native language and how they speak the lines. It adds a lot to the experience for me.

Subtitled. I want to see it as closely to how the director intended it. If I had the time I'd learn the language so I could come closer to that goal.

I couldn't imagine watching a Kurosawa flick dubbed. On the otherhand, IRON CHEF Japan is dubbed. But dubbed seems to fit the cheesy nature of that show. But for the most part, subtitles all the way.

It depends.

If I'm watching one of those cheap Kung Fu movies I'm OK with it being dubbed. But If I'm watching a movie like Ong Bak or House of Flying Daggers I like the subtitles.

Every foreign movie ever released in theaters here (and any that will be) was dubbed...
So I kinda got used to it and they actually got pretty got at it in the past 2 years or so - our best and most popular actors often do the dubbing these days.
That said, I do enjoy watching movies on DVDs at home in english. When it comes to languages I don't know I prefer well done dubbing... I don't know, I just find subtitles really distracting =/

subtitles all the way. I personally find dubbing to be distracting, even when done well, especialy knowing that that actor has no real say in how their voice is represented. I feel that dubbing de-personalizes a film, how would you feel if someone dubbed you :)

I don't know...I think it's really cool to see how many languages my friends know.

Anyway, the dubbers in the the former DDR were REAL good. I think a lot of it had to do with the "room tone" used...it idn't sound like the voices were done afterward. And the writers matched up the lip-movements really really well.

Tha's how they do it here these days. If you didn't know, you would think it was the native language you were watching. Which is why it's not that distracting... imho

I can't do dubbing anymore because for some reason I notice it. For instance if I watched rumble in the bronx I notice the dubbin even though jackie chan is dubbing his own voice.

For me, this is a tough call. I hate taking the time to read the subtitles because I feel I'm missing the picture. On the other hand, dubbing is usually sooooo bad that it hurts to listen to it. With all the starving actors out there, I would think that someone would be able to specialize in GOOD DUB ACTING. If I have both as choices, I usually listen to the dubbed version the first time so I can take in the whole visual thing, then I watch it with subtitles to see how it was originally intended.

I love watching Asian movies and I much prefer subtitles. I like to think I am absorbing the language. Last one was a 2 disk, 3 movie set Once Upon A Time In China with Jet Li.

I have tryed it... that is very cool. you can even record the film with the new synch, and watch it again...
once we dubbed the action part of an action movie. it sounded something like this:"sss-hja huu hasaaa ss-ss-ss-ss bummm ssjha " :cheesy:

We Just Do It When You Are All Kinda Drunk, But You Gotta Be Hyper. I'm Very Hyper Naturally I'll Do The Whole Movie If You Let Me. I'm Kinda Like Jim Carrey And Robin Williams With A Touch Of John Belushi

Dubbing is the work of the devil.

I saw "La Femme Nikita" when it first came out and was blown away.

I few years later I rented on video to watch with my wife. It only came dubbed. The movie just didn't work.

A few days ago I bought it on DVD and once again with subtitles the movie rocks.

Interesting how much dubbing can mess with the experience.

Chris

Subtitles. Easy. I'm 28 years old, I know how to read.

I hate that people are so lazy with movies that they need a half-a ssed dubbing that doesn't match the original performance. When it's done tongue-in-cheek that's cool, otherwise I want the real actor handling their dialogue.

For me, dubbing destroys a fundamental part of a film. Language doesn't exist separately from culture or art--it's intertwined with the meaning of a film. How can you strip out the spoken word from an actor's performance and remain true to any artisic vision? Impossible! With subtitles, most people experience something called sensory accomodation--you're no longer conscious of of the physical act of reading after a few minutes. Your brain overlays the meaning onto the intonation and subtleties of spoken language.
