Once I had to make a hardcoded subtitles and I recall using some tool which allows to set start-stop of the title by pressing and holding a key (spacebar).
So the workflow was something like:
1) prepare subtitles in a text editor (lines of text in the correct order)
2) play the video and set subtitles by holding-releasing the hotkey.
Funny thing is that i don't recall what is the name of the free software I used.
I tried several but none of them seemed to be the one i used before.
Anyone knows any free subtitle software with such functionality?
ps. I don't really want to set some hundred lines of subtitles manually by specifying beginning-end for each one,
the procedure I explained seems to me as a good starting point to adjusting subtitles to the video.
