subtitle strategy?

I am finishing off a documentary that I am preparing to submit to film festivals. My main character is going to require subtitles. I was wondering if there are any particular does or don't when subtitling a movie. What size usually? Particular color? I don't think white will work because the character is often wearing a white shirt and filling up most of the frame?

I was also wondering if there were any efficiency tricks that I am unaware of?

The character performs three raps throughout the film (that will need subtitles) and I was wondering if it was acceptable to kind of write a line as he says it, and then move it up one level to sustain for slow readers as the next line appears in the previous spot?

Silly questions probably! Thanks

There are always one or two lines of subtitles, never any more. As for color, I'd say use a dull yellow with a drop shadow, that seems to be the universal color for such things. As for font, pick something basic and non-annoying.

what about a universal size for the font. Or a relative size as in one fifth of the screen or something?

I'd suggest you to watch a couple of big foreign movies that have subtitles on.
Pretty easy solution, isn't it?
