subtitle help

Hello,

First of all, I am new to this subtitling thing, as it always scared me.

I need to add subtitles to existing dvd, for festival screening.
Problem is that original film already has other language subtitles that I can't or don't know how to remove and they appear in about 20% of the film.
so my options are either to move the new subs up above existing ones, or to put some kind of black background box behind them to cover existing subtitles.
I use dvd shrink to rip the dvd, then vobedit to demux, and finally adobe encore cs4 for adding subtitles and burning new dvd.

These existing subtitles seem to be part of the video track, because software like dvd shrink cannot see them as separate stream and cannot remove them.

So, does anyone know how to add black box behind letters? I think that it is not possible to do that in encore.

Or, can I somehow remove existing ones, that would be the best option..

Any help or hint would be greatly appreciated.

If your subtitles are burned into the video, There is no easy way of removing them. Try to find a clean source if at all possible.

Otherwise I hope you have lots of time to Edit out the text, just like you would remove something and replace the background in photoshop, for every frame that a subtitle appears.

thanks for the reply,

How can I be totally sure if subtitles are burned into the video, or separate and removable?

Check your VOB files in DGIndex, which is a tool for examining MPEG2 streams. If they show up in there, you'll be sure.

I opened vob in dgindex, and subtitles are there, in the video, but I don't see any options for subtitles or subpctures manipulation or anything similar in the menus.
Does that mean that they're definitely baked in ?

Yes, it's a tool mainly just for video analysis and - as it's called - indexing. Your subtitles are hard-coded (burned in).

you could blur out the subtitles behind and overlay the new ones and see how they look. or a black box behind the new subtitles hiding the old

Blur is good idea, but it's lots of work, I'll have to go with black box, as ugly as it is.
Any suggestions on software I could use to create that black box behind letters?

Just use the title tool in premiere.

you could blur out the lower 10% of it by copying the video onto a track above, craopping it and adding a Gaussian blur
