Subclipping from Timeline in Premiere

I recently made the switch from FCP7 to PP for video editing and I have a question that seems simple but I've had a hard time finding an answer to in the forums.

When I shoot an interview with my GH2 I always record audio separately using a shotgun mic into an external digital recorder. In FCP7 I would import both the video file and the audio file, drop them into the timeline, delete the video file's native audio track (from the camera's onboard mic), sync the shotgun mic audio file to the video, "link" them, and then make subclips from that master track. But when I do all these steps in PP I am unable to make subclips. That option in Clip Menu is greyed out. I know that I can make subclips from the viewer window in PP, but I want to make them from the timeline due to the separate audio.

Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I've found a temporary work around. I mark the In and Out points in the timeline and then Export to the Queue in Encoder. I do this throughout the interview. Then I let Encoder export the clips to become stand-alone video files, which I then have to Import back into the project.

There's got to be a better method. Any help?

I don't know of any way to get subclips out of the timeline in PP. However, this workaround may be better than rendering and re-importing.

Create multiple copies of the sequence and then trim each sequence as you want (think you have to trim vs. just setting in out points).

Then in a new master sequence you can nest those sequences in as if they were subclips.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can see how that'd work. In FCP7 I would use nested sequences all the time. I'm still getting my bearings in PP.

You're better off Merging the video and audio into one clip, then cutting it in the Source Monitor instead of the sequence.
