Greetings all.
A novice here wondering if anyone can suggest a workflow for my problem. Please be patient, it's a little hard to explain, but I'll do my best.
I have a project that was previously captured in Final Cut Express when I knew even less about video editing than I do now - no reel numbers, no reliable timecode. Every clip began at media start 00:00:00:00
I am in the process of recapturing into FCP from my tapes including reel numbers to facilitate future batch capturing. I'm using 'reconnect media' to connect each clip up to the newly captured media. I'm also changing the project's timecode from drop-frame to non-drop frame, so things are a tiny bit out of synch, but that's all fine and all the sequences seem to run more or less OK.
The real nightmare begins when I get to the sub clips. Most of the dialogue in my sequences is in the form of subclips or rather, trimmed pieces of them. I've tried using 'reconnect media' to link the subclips in the browser to the new media, then turning them into normal affiliate clips of that media by removing the subclip limits -- I then one by one assign new in and out points based on the corresponding timecode in the new media. The problem is that this doesn't help me match up subclips that I have already trimmed in the timeline.
At the moment I'm doing replace edits from the new media for every piece of subclip-based dialogue in the timeline, which means painstakingly scrubbing through the new master clip until I find the right place.
My question: Is there any way I can save myself some time and reconnect the sub-clips in the browser to the new media in a way that all the trimmed affiliate clips in all my sequences will also match up?
Thanks for having the patience to read all the way to the bottom of this, I don't know a simpler way to put it. Any tips at all that can make any part of my task easier are most welcome. In the future I will use affiliate clips in the timeline rather than subclips!
