Subclip or new master clip?

I have a clip that I want to use different parts of it in different sections of the timeline. (i.e. one continuous take of one side of a conversation) But if I try to reuse a clip, the ins and outs are for the first time I used it. So what do I do to use the clip in another part of the timeline? Do I create subclips for each section I want to use? Or do i create a new master clip?

TIA,
Mike

No, create you In and Out, drop it in the Timeline. You have now two independent copies of that clip. What you do to the copy in the Broswer will NOT effect the copy in the Timeline. To use the clip again, open it from the Browser into the Viewer, hit Option + X to clear the In and Out points, set new ones, drop that into your Timeline. You can even hit Option + X again to clear the I&O points from the Master right away if you want. It won't effect the copy in the Timeline. If you want to mess with the copy in the Timeline, double click it to open it in the Viewer. Each copy will be treated seperately.

I could swear I tried this and it didn't work. But I guess I didnt drag the right clip. I understand how FCP bascially uses references to the clips so I didn't understand why I would have to create a new clip just to use a different section. It didn't make sense.. I will try again following your directions.

Thanks!

Be sure that when you double click the copy in the Browser to open it in the Viewer, you drop it in the Timeline (drag and drop, edit button, or F10), you know after that which copy of the clip you are working on.

Here's a quick tip. When you look at a clip in the Viewer, look at the scrub bar along the bottom. If it is a copy from the Browser, it will be clear. If it is a copy from the Timeline, it will have marks in it, which are supposed to look like perferations on a strip of film. That way you won't get confused as to which copy you're working on.

If you open a copy in the Timeline, you effect that copy directly. Do NOT do this do copy the same clip to later in the Timeline! ALWAYS open the copy in the Browser and use that! It sounds to me like you're making a very common mistake in FCP and are trying to change In and Out points to the copy in the Timeline, not a good idea.

Hope this helps.
