Stutter frame effect in Dexter opening credits

Does anyone know of a way to get that stuttering frame effect that appears in the opening credit sequence of Showtime's "Dexter" series? It's not quite a dropped frame effect, but it does have a strobing quality that is very cool -- it almost looks like stop motion animation. But I can't figure out how to get the same effect in FCP. Any ideas?

And what about that sudden speed-up/slow-down effect in the opening credits of HBO's "True Blood" series. Any notions on how to get a similar effect in FCP?

Thanks,

John

I don't think any effect in FCP will do it. If you watch the opening sequence frame by frame it's simply a jump cut. Very small, sl the eye almost doesn't notice. Try by cutting a few frames out. Sometimes it is even just a slightly different angle of the same shot.

Also it's probably shot originally with a high speed shutter on a film camera(you can do this with HD/DV as well) to accentuate the effect even more. Or perhaps shot high speed frame rate as well and sped up to 24 fps- this gives a very staccato effect as well. And maybe some frames reduce and strobified even more in post.
