Stupid gobo question

When pairing a gobo with a small fresnel--150W, 300W, 650W--I'm finding it impossible to get the gobo pattern sharp. I'd assumed that there was enough distance to focus a pattern sharply from 10 feet away, but even bringing the gobo/fresnel right up to the wall doesn't yield very sharp results. What am I doing wrong?

To clarify, I know that the gobo is supposed to go between the bulb and the lens, but I'm using these little coollights tungstens and there's no easy to get it in there without cutting the gobo down. Am I borked?

You cant do that with a fresnel, it will only project a soft edge. What you need is an ellipsoidal fixture.

There you go. Try the auction site and search Cameras and Electronics for Leko, ellipsoidal, Source 4 and Source Four. They're there at good prices. The stage and DJ folks use them a lot.
