Stunt weapon kits, where can I get them?

I found these stunt kits, but they are only for rental.

http://www.issprops.com/stunt/knife_kits.htm

Is there any place I can buy them? Or is there any place to buy knives and other weapons? I'm looking for modern not fantasy or historic.

Things that interest me are kitchen knives, axes (hatchets), machetes, and possibly switchblades and scissors.

Or if there's info on how to make them, that would be great too. thanks!

What do you plan on using them for? Stunt knives don't hold up well to closeups of course...

You could always make your own. I believe semi-rigid urethane is fairly cheap and can be molded and colored to your desire. That would certainly give the greatest flexibility. You might try some halloween or SFX shops. You can usually find fake knives of various sorts at those types of places.

Why would anyone want such things? It rings alarm bells!!!!!

Umm... because most of the people here are filmmakers... meaning they make films that might involve weapons and/or death. Using REAL weapons might result in dead crew members (which might be frowned upon) I know, shocker right? Sheesh.

No offense man, but questions like "Why would anyone want such things?" makes me wonder if maybe you only watch happy chick flicks or something.

Thanks Shaw, for doing a search! It's appreciated. Unfortunately, I'll have some close up shots, for my suspense film, and those plastic halloween knives and axes won't do the trick. Perhaps there are places that sell these edged items not sharpened?

Like I know some movie props are made with rubber, but they look really REAL!

Any fx places recommended? I'm not in an area with that type of store.

And yes these are for making films. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone making a film with real blades like Pale Rider said.

Any more leads would be helpful, thanks!

Most movies usually have a combination of "stunt props" and "close up props." In Lord of the Rings, for instance, they had steel swords for close ups, aluminum (aluminium) for carrying about/some stunts and polyurethane for stunt weapons. You don't really ever see a stunt weapon up close (and when you do they did a great job painting 'em). Of course, the metal weapons were unsharpened!

As you mention, it sounds like you may need unsharpened steel in addition stunt weapons. If you did go this route be ABSOLUTELY SURE to use the unsharpened weapons for close ups. Any fast moving action (close up or far away) and you can use a stunt weapon. Heck, Curugon in his entry for the Zombie fest used a remote control in place of a knife during his throat slitting scene. No one would ever know since the movement (and good editing) made it impossible to tell. Never get a metal blade close to an actor... ever! (standard disclaimer)

Try to get your hands on a weapon or two. You might be surprised how good these things look on camera. For extreme close ups metal is the only way to go though. Of course, finding matching metal and rubber weapons would be an even greater pain in the ass.

I'm fairly confident that these would look good on camera:

Like I said though, if you can get your hands on some casting material and semi-rigid poly-urethane (and an air brush) you could certainly make very real looking custom weapons.

I find it rather disturbing that you go out of your way, to find these things for this member.

I'd much rather have someone working with safe props rather than attempt to make due with real ones! We've all needed something along these lines at one point or another since most filmmakers seem to love violence. :D

I bought a real hunting knife, about $8 and used a grinder on the edge. Looks great, safe. It still has a point, but like anything. You MUST pay attention. As everyone has said before. Use the real stuff for closeups. Rubber or polyurethane for stunt work.

You may want to check with any local theater groups around you - they may be able to help you find some of the props you need. Also check with the closest Universities/Colleges, especially if they have a theater, drama, or film department. You may also want to give your local TV stations and/or any local production companies a call - they may be able to point you toward a local fx company or department. Good luck!!

Its not like he was asking for REAL weapons!

Hey thanks everyone! You all have been very helpful.

I have one of those plastic machettes, the picture looks alot better than the real thing unfortunately. However, like you all said, I can use that when doing some stunt work.

Yes I am looking for something with dulled blades, and grinding is an option. By any chance do you know how dangerous it is? How could I get my knives grinded? I plan to get some cheap dollar store kitchen knives dulled out, and machete. Any advice on that?

And thanks for the tip about the theaters and colleges. I'll definitely look into that one soon!

There is no need to be sarcastic. I know it is nothing to do with me.
Perhaps if your brother had been stabbed to death, you might be be wairey about such things.
I am sorry that you are hypersensitive about posts, I thought all Film Makers were open to critcism.

No wonder the States have so many enemies.

Whoa man,

As I said in the post, I meant no offense by my comments. I am very sorry to hear about your brother. My point was that there was nothing strange about someone asking for places to find prop weapons. This is a filmmaking board, and these are common items to use in filmmaking. If anyone jumped to conclusions, I'm afraid it would be you, as you suggested (with your 'warning bells' comment) that the guy who asked about this might be up to no good. That's a very bold and judgmental statement. Especially when you consider that this is a filmmaking board, as I already said. Again, I meant no ill will by my comment, just trying to show you that maybe your post wasn't well thought out. As for bashing the U.S., come on man... why would you try and insult my heritage? That's very rude and quite mean spirited. Even so, I've got nothing against you man, just try and think carefully before you post.

palerider you don't need to explain yourself, this person must keep her personable psyche out of here. she is projecting on others. i think it's said and done

Sorry about your brother, but if you stick around here you will find a lot of questions about guns, knifes, bottles to use to smash over peoples heads, windows that people can go crashing thrrough ... its all part of filmmaking. And while we are open to critcism, we are not open to being "spanked" by anyone for talking about filmmaking. We are not the ones being hypersensitive and if it bothers you so much, then I'd suggest you don't go to the SFX area of the boards.
