Stuff to film solo

Hey everyone,

So I'm sure people have probably experienced this when they were starting out, if you didn't then you are lucky!

I'm lacking people to film or film with. My main love and desire is to film biking, but I'm running into a problem where I don't have enough people to film and I often get stuck with a camera but nothing to shoot. I'm not closed off to stuff other than biking but I just need an idea that doesn't really require anyone else. I live in LA so you would think it would be easy to find something but I'm not a huge fan of going out on the street filming alone.

So I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on what I could film and then make into a short video.

Thanks!

Scott

I just finished a short doc on a person organizing a pedal powered concert (shot solo). I'm no biker but as a result of this project I've discovered a whole sub-culture. I didn't know there was a ten day bike celebration with all sorts of organizations involved in promoting bikes. I think you just have to ask and I'm sure someone is working on something interesting. See if there is some funding and if not volunteer to do a small project. Everything I've volunteered for has usually led to some paid project. Hope that helps.

And are you reluctant to shoot on the street because it's dangerous? Street video can be lots of fun if you find an interesting character. Don't know much about LA, but all the movies seem to show it. :-)

Yes it is indeed a problem many run into. My first short film, I had zero access to actors so I wrote a script with only one character and pressured my girlfriend at the time into doing it.

The important thing to remember, is that there are always options. Art can thrive and become stronger under limitations. It requires you to push your creativity.

As for what you could film, you could always go buy a GoPro and attach it to your helmet or bike. You could get some very exciting/interesting footage from that.
