Studios near Miami

Well, the time has come for me to choose a univeristy to attend. You could probably guess I want to major in film studies, considering I've been posting here for about a year. Anyway, one of my options is the University of Miami. Now, half the reason in choosing a film school for me would be the people I'd meet and proximity to film studios. If I were starting out as a cam op, and eventually getting to DP, would there be a good number of opportunities for employment in the Miami area? I know with L.A., there are 5 film studios for every 1 starbucks, I'm just not sure how Miami would compare. Anyone with experience in the area? My other choices for schools would be New York, and L.A., if it were to turn out that Miami sucks.

I agree, LA is the place to go if you want to study film. USC arguably being #1 with UCLA being a close second. NYU has a good film school too. If you go anywhere else, you won't really meet anyone that could possibly help you in the future (and that's probably the only reason to actually go to film school.) If you're serious, save some money and move to LA...

UM is expensive.

UM is expensive.

I live here in Miami. I know nothing of UM's film program. I graduated from UF, but not in film. I am self taught in the area of video. Do you really need to go to school? I should have skipped school. It was lots of fun, but didn't help me get a job.

I will give you the low down on UM. It is very expensive. I forget how much, but prepare to spend $20,000 a year just on tuition. Their trick is to give you a scholarship. Then it seems affordable. Then after you go there for two years they take it away. This is standard practice. Then you are screwed. You can't really transfer because other schools will not take all of your credits. You then have to take out a huge loan to finish school. Several of my friends got full scholarships that were to be for four years but got taken away after two. This is serious advice. I don't know if Universities in NY of CA are the same, but I know how UM operates. You have been warned.

Other than that, UM is a nice school and has a nice campus.

If you want a job down here you had better learn Spanish.

Best of luck. College years are the best years of your life.
