Studio Boom?

If I hadn't just spent hours reading through the posts on this forum, I would start by saying that this could be the dumbest question ever. But, I have spent many hours going through the posts and realize it wouldn't even make the top 5. But here it is:

I keep hearing talk about booms and fishpoles, but they all are handheld. I expect to shoot a lot of interviews for a documentary where the subject will be sitting still in a chair (mostly). So:

1) Can I set up a mic on a boom and let it be while I man the camera?

2) Can fishpoles be fitted on studio booms? (if that's what they're called) ... or do I need a fishpole and a studio boom?

3) Is this really the dumbest question ever asked?

Thank you in advance to anyone that can help me on this one. And thank you to all the folks who contribute to this site ... you've helped me get started on the road to understanding what the ---k I'm doing when it comes to audio.

Not a stupid question at all...

If you know your interviewee is not going to move, you can mount a stationary mic over their head. The simplest and least expensive way is with a basic mic stand (make sure it raises high enough). I have one I bought at Guitar Center for like $50 or so that works for me in these situations. Be sure to get a sandbag to go with it to make sure it doesn't fall over on your subject.

I use the same telescoping boom pole both on location and in the studio. In studio, I just raise a C-stand with a Mafer clamp to grip the boom handle. Most regular mic stands don't have a long enough boom arm on them to mount a mic for interviews (and keep it out of the shot). You can get special studio booms, but which way you go depends on your needs.

Thank You

OK. So it was pretty stupid. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Here's hoping I don't knock anyone on the head.

Hey, I'm a professinal and I've done it three or four times. A good knock on the head can liven things up sometimes. Just be sure you sheathe your unit with a windscreen.

It's not a stupid question. You just haven't been enlightened to the awesome power and flexibility of the C-stand. Bow down before it! Someone should write one of those "Duct Tape" books about its endless uses.
