i have to write a script with a theme of obsession. all the students are doing negative stuff with bad endings. can any of you creative people come up with an idea for a positive obsession theme idea that's possible to shoot by a student?
Well, what is obsession? Obsession is persistence, dedication, and passion. Are not most users on the boards here "obsessed" with the craft of filmmaking? Does your story have to be about obsession or merely involve it? After all, if someone is truly obsessed with something, the story could be about whatever their passion is, not the simple fact that they have a passion.
I'm sure brainstorming with that in mind couldn't hurt. Is a firefighter obsessed with saving someone's life in a burning building? Is a detective obsessed with finding the killer? Is an athlete obsessed with scoring the winning goal?
I'm sure you can come up with something that is interesting while not being a downer.
This is kinda related to a seminar I saw online of Adam from Myth Busters talking...
Obsession can lead to so many good things. When you have an obsession it can be revolved around a passion and people with those obsessions will go to great lengths to do what ever it is or be whatever it is they have a passion for.
I will will learn a whole new bunch of trades that I will never master, but need to know, just to get a project done. Obsession leads to knew doors and people and can really help you understand a lot more about life.
Maybe it would help to do a few quick surveys or interviews, just asking people around that you know, "what is something positive that you obsess about?" so you can use ideas from that in your script.
Two films I feel deal with obsession best are The Presteige and The Wrestler, as both touch on both the negative and positive sides of obsession (although mostly negative). Maybe watching those could give you some inspiration.
Your protag could obsess with a cause -- like saving a giant sequoia tree from loggers, etc. Or saving an acre of land that her grandfather plowed, etc. Just simple ideas to spark other ideas from you but you get the idea. Take the film The Power of One, obsession of a sort about what one person can do to bring literacy to the poor/black masses; opposition in the form of apartheid, and in the midst of Nazi WW2 coming to South Africa. A protagonist obsessed about a worth cause, with formidable obstacles to winning that cause. On a smaller short film no budget scale-- maybe e.g. someone working in a soup kitchen decides to bring gourmet soups to the menu for the homeless, opposed by the person managing the soup kitchen who does her job only to look good for her church or political reasons, etc.
