stuck in a soundless rut.

i think i may be going insane.

several months ago i bought a super 8 camera (canon 814 ez but have since bought a 1014 as well) and have absolutely fell in love with it. my school luckily still shoots film albeit regular 16

but i just cant pull myself to attempt to shoot a project on well cough cough i have an xl2...but i just am left so unsatisfied with the video look anymore...anyways it is a sound project with several shorter dialogue sequences...

any advice...should i just save up for a crystal synch?

i dont know what to do...i cant afford all this film...but i cant live without it...

another credit card? possibly?

Mn, let me tell you something...ive been shooting tons of super 8 lately and I want to dispell a myth about the syncing thing.

If you have a 24fps Super 8 camera and you keep your takes to a minute or less, you will have very little trouble syncing in post. You can ask anyone who has actually done it and isnt merely speculating and they will tell you the same thing. Many of the Super 8 cameras were sound cameras as well so dont forget that.

I understand what you mean about not being able to go from Super 8 back to an XL2. I sold my XL2 to buy Super 8 stock. The XL2 absolutely sucks compared to Super 8. Sell the XL2, get yourself a nice little $400 digital sound recorder, and get yourself a crap load of various stocks. If you dont have an external light meter, get one of those too. You will be so much happier. And post will be fun since you dont have to try to "look like film" because you already got it, baby.

i like your style.

i actually took one of the older light meters from my school. the ones with the metal inserts...the wholly nondigital ones.

i was thinking about just buying a DAT recorder and seeing if I could synch up...and if not just use cutaways.

thanks for the advice. and post with film is so much more fun. because you look at your footage and feel like yoyu made a film. not a home movie. if that makes any sense.

are you editing your super 8 film - as in actually cutting it - using viewer ?

i had my super 8 kodachrome project
..cut up scenes into bins .. then i made 3 cuts ( tape splices) and that was it - i spliced it all back together and had it transferred to digibeta ... going to finish digital and out to tape ... i had a copy from digibeta to dvcam made and that is what i'm editing .. later i'll go back to the digibeta ..YES there is a good difference between digibeta and dvcam

no no.

i havent cut film yet. i definately would if it was like a home movie or something kind of project i would trust myself cutting. i have a great editing professor who is older and worked in the business for 30 something odd years cutting real film.

i may get the movie-ola out after christmas. :-)
