Stu rocks

Thanks man! What a kind and random bit of flattery. This forum rocks, and so does the DVX100a, a camera I own and love and cannot possibly shoot with enough.

The Orphanage and Red Giant Software are working on some great new tools for DV shooters, so stay tuned.

Hey Stu, fantastic to have you around here. Let us know if there's ever anything we can do for you here!

Awesome to have you on here Stu! Your chapter on learning how to see in Mark Christiansen's book is the most insightful piece of work I've read on compositing (and overall creative approach in general), I constantly re-read it for inpsiration and to get back in touch with the basics. Thanks!

What book is that?

By the way, looks like Stu's got more than just a chapters worth of stuff to say.
Looking forward to reading this when it comes out.

Although August 23rd is still a while away.

Wow, Stu's book looks like a very good read. The book I was referring to is After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques. It's a very good book on AE and compositing with some very handy insight by Stu and Brendan Bolles (who does an awesome chapter about linear color space, log, float, and eLin) It's a really good book that gives you the meat and bones of compositing instead of tired old tutorials. I prefer this method so that you have the building blocks for any composition, versus only knowing one method.

You will thoroughly enjoy it...I've probably read through most of it a few times now.

Stu,

Can you disclose any info on what those "great new tools for DV shooters" will do?

Just what's probably obvious, that we're working on the next generation of Magic Bullet products, and they will continue to embody our philosphy that creative tools should be both fun and powerful.

Any wish-lists or pie-in-the-sky ideas are welcome!

are you serious?

cool, I am going to think about it!

I don't know, is there any noise reduction included?

Is noise reduction something you find yourself needing a lot? What application would you want to do this in?

Here's a few that I would like to see made by Red Giant:

1. A actual lens simulation plug-in that simulates prime cinema lenses, i.e. Zeiss, Cooke, etc. If there is one out there I'm not familiar with it. Also include popular lenses like the DVX100 and others. Maybe make it work with the 3D camera, I don't know just a thought.

2. A color grading plug-in with the ability to draw masks on the layer and grade different parts with seperate controls, like color balance, exposure, etc. This would be nice so that you don't have to create multiple layers to do this.

That's a few that I can think of.

The new Photoshop has an extremely fast and easy color match function making one photo have the same pallete as another. Yes, a white balance would do this and yes, color correction is a "must know", but a one click wonder like that would be awsome.

Another nifty tool would be an easy and numerically based luminance/color picker, where you could pick say 127,127,127, and then choose how many shades up and/or down you wish to include AS WELL as the rate those shades fall off in opacity. Not unlinke the "fuzzyiness" option so many have, but something a little more precise, and with the option of choosing Hue, Sat, or Lum to include (or exclude). Something like a keyer, but which could be used more for occlusion/blooming.

Lens/rack focus based on z-depth/track matte (the track matte layer being fully animatable).

Displacement map creation use in which the matte layer can be animated/teaked.
