Stretched Video - Square Pixels vs non-square pixe

Does anyone know how to make Vagas encode (Render as) an MPEG-2 file without distorting the video and streching it?

I have a Quicktime movie that is 720x480 with non-square pixels which encodes into normal looking 4:3 video for DVD playback using Adobe's MPEG encoder.  When trying to use Vagas to create the MPEG file, it looks stretched / wider and there are black bars (very small black bars... not letterbox or anything near that thick) at the top and bottom of the screen.

It appears that Vagas isn't treating the pixels correctly (square vs. non-square).  Is there a setting to tell it to encode correctly?  Again, Adobe MPEG encoder looks normal but vagas is keeping the stretched pixel values.

There's more that to the story (things I've tried) but I'll save that for later...

Can anyone help?

Hi jpottenger,
I always set my project to match the existing video file. Vegas does this automatically - go to File Menue and choose Properties - then click match media settings then bring your video file into Vegas. Then when you render an mpeg file Vegas knows how to treat the file.

What version of Vagas do you have? I think Version 4 does not have the "match media" button you spoke of.

In any case, I know how to set up the project to match my video so that the image doesn't distort in the preview window. It however reverts back to being stretched when rendering it as MPEG Video. Everything will look and play fine until I render it.

What setting do I use to keep it from stretching? Square aspect ratio works, but then it's not accepted by DVD authoring programs (such as ReelDVD) because it's not properly formated for DVD.

Any other thoughts?

I have Version 4 .0c.
The match media setting is in the properties section, it's the button over on the far right next to the delete template, it is a folder icon with an arrow pointing out.
I use dvda with vegas, but save the file as a main concept mpeg2 file then select the appropriate template (probably try the DVDArchitect NTSC video stream) from template drop down list don't use the default. Then render the audio file and that should import into ReelDVD, although I never have used Reeldvd it may require a different type of mpeg file suffix (such as .mpeg or .mp2) vegas can only render .mpg

I wanted to follow up with a post on how I got this to work in case anyone in the future has a similar problem.  Special thanks to Dave Russell for the fix.  Here is his e-mail to me...
--------
"Here is the fix:

Drag mov clip to timeline

Right click on video on the time line select properties

Click on the media tab at top

Under pixel aspect ratio, select NTSC DV from the pull down menu

Hope that helps

Dave"

Thanks Dave!  It worked...you are a Genius!
