You can continue to make AVC Compliant h.264 videos to stream online without fear of being charged a licensing fee from MPEG-LA. Originally the royalty-free end date was going to be 2016.

This should be seen as good news for any content provider.

Surprising move from the MPEG-LA. I guess it would have been logistically impossible to collect royalties on each and every encode out there.

That settles it for me. As much as people may want to have an open codec for HTML5, H.264 (particularly x264 as you know) has proven itself unbeatable.
